MONTCLAIR, NJ – The Rowan University field hockey team lost 4-3 in overtime at Montclair State University in the semifinals of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship Tournament.
The second seed Montclair State (18-1) will play at the top seed The College of New Jersey (19-2) on Saturday, November 5 in the conference final. The NJAC champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. In the other semifinal game, TCNJ defeated the fourth seed Kean University, 5-1.
This is the first time the conference has had a championship tournament for field hockey. Rowan was seeded third. The Profs have a 13-7 record and they will have to wait until Sunday, November 6 to see if they receive an at-large bid to the national tournament.
Back Chelsea Keelen (sr. Tinton Falls, NJ/Middletown S.) recorded the game winner at 2:23 into the first overtime on a penalty corner. The goal was assisted by forward Brooke Hullings (so. Delran, NJ/Delran) and forward Emily Burd (fr. Newton, NJ/Newton).
Midfielder Brittany Carroll (so. Kingston, NY/Rondout Valley) contributed with two goals and one assist. Midfielder Michelle Hagel (jr. Fairfield, NJ/West Essex) added a goal and forward Kate Norgard (jr. Columbia, NJ/North Warren Reg.) registered an assist. Forwards Kellie Campbell (fr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) and Marisa Schoepflin (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) and midfielder Ashley Adams (sr. Erial, NJ/Timber Creek Reg.) each scored for the Profs. Midfielder Julie Cairone (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) had an assist.
The Profs trailed 3-1 going into the second half. Adams scored an unassisted goal at 64:48. She knocked in a rebound after a save. Rowan was awarded a penalty corner as time expired. Cairone took the corner and passed to Schoepflin who hit the cage to tie the score.
Carroll had the first goal unassisted at 20:56. Hagel hit in the net, 1:02 later. The goal was assisted by Carroll and Norgard. Carroll found the cage a second time at 27:08. With 1:22 remaining, Campbell put Rowan on the scoreboard.
Rowan totaled 21 shots while MSU produced 18. Goalie Jen Goldberg (jr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) made eight saves for the Profs. Goalie Megan Bosland (jr. Boonton, NJ/Boonton) stopped seven shots for the Red Hawks.
