ANNVILLE, PA – The Rowan University men’s basketball team lost to Wesley College, 90-53 in the first round of the Rinso Marquette Tournament on Saturday. The tournament is being held at Lebanon Valley College.
On Sunday, Rowan (1-1) meets Gallaudet University (1-1) in the consolation game at 1 p.m. Wesley (1-0) advances to the championship against Lebanon Valley (1-1). In the first round, Lebanon Valley defeated Gallaudet, 79-62.
The Wolverines had five players that scored in double figures. Forward Paul Reynolds (jr. Smyrna, DE/Smyrna) totaled 17 points, a game-high 12 rebounds and six assists. Guard JJ Bryant (fr. Dover, DE/Dover) contributed with 17 points and forward David Langan (so. Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Mem.) followed with 16. Langan also grabbed nine boards. Forward Destin Johnson (fr. Pooler, GA/Groves) and guard Chris Douglas (sr. Landover, MD/Jericho Prep Academy) each chipped in with 10 points.
For the Profs, forward Jason Sofman (so. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) scored 17 points. Center Dee Benson (so. Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) collected 11 points and six rebounds. Guard Rich McNamara (so. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) pulled down six rebounds. Guard Jason Rosenberg (so. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) dished five assists.
Wesley started the game with a 13-4 run to lead by nine points at 15:56. Bryant scored five of the 13 points. At 14:23, the Wolverines were ahead 15-8. Rowan pulled within four points (15-11) after a layup and foul shot by Sofman at 13:51. Bryant’s three-pointer made the score, 21-11 (12:31). Sofman hit two free throws (11:56) and the Profs trailed by six (21-15). With 9:53 remaining, Wesley was up by seven points (24-17).
The Wolverines pulled away with a 9-3 run that ended at 6:56 with a three by Bryant. Reynolds made a basket at 2:28 for a 15-point advantage (39-24). Johnson’s dunk at 1:04 made the score, 43-27. With 29 seconds on the clock, McNamara ended the scoring with a tip-in. Wesley was ahead 43-29 at the break. Bryant ended the period with 14 points while Sofman had 13.
In the second half, Rowan was down by 12 points (48-36) at 17:23 after a basket by Sofman. Wesley recorded 15 unanswered points to lead by 27 (63-36) at 12:56. With 6:38 left, the Wolverines were up 75-42. Three straight baskets by Langan (6:03), Reynolds (5:38) and Douglas (5:01) made the score 81-42. In the final 3:28, Wesley led by 40 points four times.
