Rowan Wins NCAA First Round Game, 1-0 With Goal by Rhea in Overtime

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Rowan University women’s soccer team won 1-0 in overtime against Shenandoah University in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament on Saturday night.  Forward Veronica Rhea scored the game-winning goal. 

Rowan (14-4) will play SUNY New Paltz (13-5-3) in the second round on Sunday at 5 p.m.  New Paltz advanced in the other first round game over host Lynchburg College on penalty kicks (3-2).  The teams played to a scoreless tie after two overtimes.

The second round winner moves on to the sectionals on Friday and Saturday, November 18 and 19 or Saturday and Sunday, November 19 and 20.  The national semifinals and final are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, December 2 and 3 at the Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio, TX.

Rhea’s (sr. Pennsauken, NJ/Paul VI) winning goal came at 4:03 into the first 10-minute overtime.  It was her 10th goal on the season and fourth game winner.  The Profs totaled 18 shots while the Hornets took eight.  Goalkeeper Maria Dorris (jr. Mantua, NJ/Clearview Reg.) made two saves for the shutout.  For Shenandoah, goalie Kat Terza (sr. Manassas, VA/Seton) turned away eight shots.
