Rowan Defeats William Paterson, 30-21

WAYNE, NJ – Running back Steve Hevalow totaled 156 yards rushing and two touchdowns to lead Rowan University to a 30-21 victory over William Paterson University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game on Saturday.

The Profs improve to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in the conference.  The Pioneers have a 2-3 record with a 1-3 NJAC mark.  Hevalow (sr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) had 27 touches for a 5.8 yards per carry average.  Quarterback Louie Bianchini (so. West Long Branch, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) completed 10 of 19 passes for 187 yards and one touchdown.  Wide receiver Eddie Eisenhart (fr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) made three catches for 98 yards.  Tight end Kevin DelleDonne (sr. Summit, NJ/Summit) added two grabs for 24 yards and a touchdown.  Kicker Tommy Wilczynski (so. Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook) converted two field goals (three attempts) and two extra points (two attempts).

Linebacker Dean Hammel (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) led the defense with 11 tackles (four solo, seven assisted).  Linebacker Geno Raman (sr. Mullica Hill, NJ/N. Kingstown (RI)) followed with eight stops (two solo, six assisted).  Linebacker Patrick Ruley (jr. Margate, NJ/Atlantic City) added seven tackles (two solo, five assisted) and one sack (-6 yards).  Defensive end Josh Popper (fr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Holy Spirit) recorded three tackles (two solo, one assisted), two sacks  (-6 yards) and one interception.

For the Pioneers, quarterback Joe Salame (fr. Lodi, NJ/Lodi) threw for 186 yards and two touchdowns with 10 completions in 19 attempts.  He also had a rushing touchdown.  Running back Dawys German (jr. North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington) had 37 yards on 18 carries.  Wide receiver Mick Paye (so. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) hauled in three balls for 109 yards and two touchdowns.

Linebacker Jim Hamill (sr. Stanhope, NJ/Lenape) posted a game-high 12 tackles (two solo, 10 assisted) and a fumble recovery.  Bandit Doug Dudek (sr. Rockaway, NJ/Morris Hills) registered nine stops (four solo, five assisted) and forced one fumble.  Linebacker Clifton Glaze (jr. Palymyra, NJ/Palmyra) and safety German Decena (jr. Union City, NJ/Emerson) contributed with eight tackles apiece.  Defensive end Damian DiIorio (sr. Totowa, NJ/Passaic Valley) compiled seven tackles (three solo, four assisted), three tackles for a loss (-21 yards), two sacks (-18 yards) and one forced fumble.

Rowan jumped out to a 3-0 lead at 8:07 in the first quarter following a 20 yard field goal by Wilczynski.  Rowan started on the William Paterson six yard line after defensive end Chris Alvarez (fr. Cliffside Park, NJ/Cliffside Park) blocked a punt.  At 2:05, Hevalow found the end zone on a one yard run.  Rowan got the ball after Popper intercepted a pass by Salame on the Pioneers’ 42 yard line.  Bianchini completed two passes (two attempts) for 40 yards in the drive.  With 20 seconds left in the first half, Wilczynski nailed a 41 yard field goal to make the score, 13-0 at the intermission.  Bianchini threw for 60 yards with three completions (five attempts).

DelleDonne had an eight yard touchdown grab at 7:05 in the third period to extend the advantage to 20-0.  Hevalow carried the ball twice for 26 yards.  At 14:05 in the fourth stanza, Paye had a 49 yard touchdown reception on the first play of the drive.  The Pioneers cut the deficit to six (20-14) after Salame completed a 29 yard touchdown pass to Paye at 12:01.  On the previous play, Paye had a 31 yard catch.

At 8:07, Salame’s one yard touchdown carry put William Paterson up, 21-20.  The Pioneers took over on the Profs’ 39 yard line after Dudek forced a fumble and Hamill recovered it.  The drive consisted of a few short runs and a 15 yard personal foul penalty.  Rowan answered with a six yard touchdown rush by Hevalow.  The two point conversion catch by wide receiver Dan Reed (so. Westmont, NJ/Haddon Twp.) made the score, 28-20.  Hevalow ran the ball four times for 30 yards.  With 57 seconds remaining, William Paterson was called for a holding penalty in the end zone for a safety.
