WAYNE, NJ – The Rowan University men and women’s swimming and diving teams started the 2011-12 season with a sweep at conference opponent William Paterson University on Thursday night. The Prof men won 124-99 while the women had a 134-82 victory.
The women came in first in the 200 yard medley relay in 1:59.23 with Lindsey Raleigh (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River S.), Casey Sickler (fr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.), Charlene Gustafson (so. Clifton, NJ/Clifton) and Teresa Stearns (jr. Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit). The men had first places in the 200 medley (1:36.86) and 400 freestyle (3:23.90) relays. The medley relay included Larry Dow (so. Alexandria, VA/T.C. Williams), Dan Bower (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), Max Tyburski (jr. Burke, VA/Lake Braddock Secondary) and Bill Malone (sr. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic). Tim Dimond (jr. Allentown, PA/Emmaus), Chris Cervini (fr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland), Elliot Ortiz (fr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) and Mitch Friedel (so. Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) were on the free relay.
In the women’s 1,000 freestyle, Allison Schneider (so. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) was the winner in 11:13.33 while Alyssa Schaefer (fr. Ringwood, NJ/DePaul Catholic) and Christie Carroll (so. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) were second (11:48.39) and third (12:37.08) respectively. Schneider also won the 200 free with a time of 2:05.55. Schaefer took first in the 500 freestyle (5:35.97).
Stearns finished first in the 50 freestyle (26.48) and Leanne Zaug (fr. Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) followed second (27.17). Gustafson swam a winning time of 2:21.98 in the 200 individual medley. She also took first place in the 100 butterfly (1:01.95). Sickler had a first place in the 100 yard freestyle (58.17). Raleigh won the 100 backstroke (1:05.39) and 100 breaststroke (1:14.62).
Kylie O’Rourke (jr. Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May Reg.) totaled 208.90 points in the one meter diving for first place. The women’s three meter diving was won by Rachel Anzano (fr. Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewod) with 168 points. Brandon Thayres (fr. Thorofare, NJ/West Deptford) came in first in the men’s one meter diving (184.10 points).
The men finished first through third in the 200 freestyle. Malone was the winner in 1:47.95 followed by Dimond, second (1:48.18) and Kevin Sheridan (sr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick), third (1:57.27). In the 100 free, Malone won in 47.90. Tyburski and Dow were first (21.54) and second (22.57) respectively in the 50 free. In addition, Tyburski swam a winning time of 52.47 in the 100 butterfly while Dow took first in the 100 backstroke (55.40).
Bower won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:06.86 while Luke Minka (fr. Wilmington, DE/Vista (CA)) and Tyler Huizing (fr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) were second (2:08.38) and third (2:09.92) respectively. In the 100 breaststroke, Bower finished first in 1:01.17. Garry Hessler (fr. Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) took second in the 1000 freestyle (11:02.16) followed by Tom Frain (fr. Allenwood, NJ/Wall), third (11:30.29).
Rowan hosts Salisbury University in the home opener on Tuesday, October 25 at 6 p.m.
