TCNJ Swimming & Diving Defeats Rowan To Capture NJAC Titles

GLASSBORO, NJ – The College of New Jersey men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams defeated host Rowan University on Saturday to capture the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championships. The men won 179-110 and the women had a 179-117 victory. It was the last conference meet of the year for both schools.

The TCNJ women have won 11 conference titles overall while the men have five. It was the third straight for both since the NJAC has had enough teams for a conference again starting in 2008-09. The Lion women are undefeated with an 8-0 record and the men are 7-2 on the season. They each finished with a 4-0 NJAC mark. The Rowan men’s and women’s team are 7-2 overall and they were 3-1 in the conference.

TCNJ’s women won the 200 yard medley (1:53.06) and 400 yard freestyle (3:43.03) relays. The medley relay included Traci Hofer, Kelsey Herchenrider, Laura Pierce and Kayleigh Shangle. Ashley Conroy, Caroline Kelly, Margaret Molloy and Pierce were on the free relay.

Molloy recorded first places in the 1000 freestyle (10:44.57), 200 yard breaststroke (2:26.83) and 100 yard butterfly (1:00.37). Conroy finished first (1:00.78) in the 100 yard backstroke and second (2:12.05) in the 200 yard back. Hofer had a winning time of 25.09 in the 50 yard free. Pierce won the 200 yard butterfly in 2:09.56 and Hofer followed second (2:12.74). Stephanie Silleck had a first place (1:08.87) in the 100 yard breaststroke.

Jenny Zavoda won the 200 yard freestyle (1:58.15) followed by Kelly second (2:02.30) and Amanda Waldner third (2:03.67). Shangle swam a winning time of 56.32 in the 100 yard freestyle. Melissa Hessler came in first (5:18.82) in the 500 yard freestyle. Danielle Dilts had a second place (25.72) in the 50 free.

The Rowan women took second in the 200 yard medley relay (1:54.20) with Kate Winters, Stacey Rahter, Anne O’Gorman and Briana Baud. The 400 free relay was second in 3:50.98. Baud, Teresa Stearns, Allison Schneider and Charlene Gustafson made up the freestyle relay.

Winters won the 200 yard backstroke (2:10.90) and the 200 individual medley (2:14.52). Schneider was second in the 500 (5:25.25) and 1000 (11:07.58) freestyles. In the 100 yard backstroke, Winters and Lauren Grajek were second (1:02.08) and third (1:04.93) respectively. Rahter took second in the 100 (1:10.15) and 200 (2:32.96) yard breaststrokes and the 200 individual medley (2:16.20).

Gustafson was second (1:02.11) in the 100 yard butterfly and O’Gorman was third (1:02.48). Baud finished third (26.01) in the 50 free followed by Stearns fourth (26.05). In the 100 yard freestyle, Baud came in second (57.17) while Stearns was third (57.98). Julianne Furdyna registered third places in the 500 (5:27.61) and 1000 (11:09.69) yard freestyles.

In the women’s diving, TCNJ’s Sabrina Lucchesi took first place on the one meter (277.58) and three meter (295.05) boards. Rowan’s Samantha Rottkamp and Katherine Anzano were second (250.05) and third (236.48) respectively in the one meter diving. Rottkamp had a second place (217.20) in the three meter diving and Anzano was third (198.0).

TJ Burns won the men’s three meter diving with 333.53 points while Rowan’s Mark Balesteri and Kyle Bianchini were second (284.63) and third (243.08) respectively. Burns also captured first place on the one meter board (325.50 points). Balesteri came in second (318.68) followed by Bianchini third (250.53).

The TCNJ men won the 200 yard medley relay (1:37.32) with the team of Joseph Tseng, Michael Oliva, Tom Medvecky and Shawn Kircher. In the 200 yard freestyle, Kircher had a winning time of 1:44.04. Evan Paulan captured first (1:00.36) in the 100 yard breaststroke. Timothy Rauch and James Milone were first (2:03.41) and second (2:04.21) respectively in the 200 yard butterfly. Ryan Clark was the winner (47.42) in the 100 yard freestyle. Mike Caputo took first (4:47.15) in the 500 yard freestyle. Medvecky swam a winning time of 52.28 in the 100 yard butterfly.

For the Lions, Pete Goldsmith won the 1000 yard freestyle (10:03.20) while Matthew Peveler and Andrew Hessler were second (10:18.50) and third (10:18.75) respectively. Adam Schneider was the winner (21.45) in the 50 yard freestyle. Tseng took first (2:03.53) in the 200 yard individual medley. Phil Hawley came in second (55.43) in the 100 yard backstroke. Andrew Smith had a second place (2:02.00) in the 200 yard backstroke. In the 200 yard breaststroke, Matthew Knoth was the winner (2:16.23) followed by Hessler second (2:17.22).

Rowan had a first place in the men’s 400 yard freestyle relay (3:15.99) with Jerry Capriotti, Tim Dimond, Bill Malone and Jake Scaramazza. The 200 yard medley relay came in third (1:44.50). The medley relay included Stefan Pietrobono, Dan Bower, Ryan McNally and Capriotti.

Pietrobono won the 100 yard backstroke in 55.33. Dimond produced a winning time of 1:59.48 in the 200 yard backstroke. He came in second (54.72) in the 100 yard butterfly and McNally was third (55.40). Malone took second in the 50 (22.10), 100 (48.02) and 200 (1:45.81) yard freestyles. Bower had a second place (1:01.38) in the 100 yard breaststroke. In the 200 yard individual medley, Jeff Terrell was second (2:07.97) followed by Bower third (2:09.97). Terrell also took second (5:06.85) in the 500 yard freestyle.

Next week, Rowan hosts Cabrini College on Saturday, February 5 at 1 p.m. in the final meet of the regular season.
