Rowan Swimming and Diving Teams Sweep Montclair State

MONTCLAIR, NJ – The Rowan University men’s and women’s swim teams won at conference opponent Montclair State University on Saturday. The men had a 161-133 victory while the women had a score of 169-123.

Both the Prof men and women teams are 7-1 overall and 3-0 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The Red Hawk men are 5-5 on the season with a 1-2 conference mark while the women have a 4-5 record and a 1-2 NJAC mark.

The Rowan men finished first in the 400 yard freestyle relay (3:17.76) and the 200 yard medley relay came in second (1:42.07). The free relay consisted of Michael Brooks (sr. Brigantine, NJ/Holy Spirit), Jerry Capriotti (fr Vineland, NJ/Vineland), Tim Dimond (so. Allentown, PA/Emmaus) and Bill Malone (jr. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic). Stefan Pietrobono (so. Newark, DE/Brandywine), Dan Bower (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), Capriotti and Jake Scaramazza (fr. Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) made up the medley relay.

Dimond recorded three first places in the individual events. He was the winner in the 100 yard butterfly (55.48), 200 yard backstroke (2:04.08) and 1000 yard freestyle (10:21.47). Malone took first (49.76) in the 100 yard freestyle. He came in second (1:49.72) in the 200 yard freestyle and he was third (58.97) in the 100 yard backstroke.

Pietrobono swam a winning time of 56.33 in the 100 yard backstroke. Brian McDermott (sr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergen Catholic) captured first in the 200 yard butterfly in 2:08.84. Capriotti had a first place (22.71) in the 50 yard free. Bower finished second in the 100 (1:03.11) and 200 (2:27.13) yard breaststrokes.

Jeff Terrell (so. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) took third in the 500 (5:11.73) and 1000 (10:51.07) yard freestyles. Ryan McNally (sr. Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) was third (56.58) in the 100 yard butterfly while Mike Demarest (fr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) came in third (2:07.53) in the 200 yard backstroke. Ryan Walker (so. Union, NJ/Union Catholic) finished third (2:10.73) in the 200 individual medley.

In diving, Mark Balesteri (sr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) won the one meter diving (five dives) with 177.97 points. He also had a first place (296.75 points) in the one meter diving (six dives). Kyle Bianchini (sr. Blackwood, NJ/Highland Reg.) was second (246.90 points) in the one meter diving (six dives) and third (109.20 points) in the one meter (five dives). Samantha Rottkamp (jr. Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) won both women’s one meter diving events with 179.92 points (five dives) and 254.85 points (six dives).

The Prof women took first in the 400 yard freestyle relay (3:51.57) and they had a second place (1:56.03) in the 200 yard medley relay. Allison Schneider (fr. Cranford, NJ/Cranford), Stacey Rahter (sr. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.), Briana Baud (fr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) and Teresa Stearns (so. Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit) swam on the free relay. The medley relay included Kate Winters (sr. Princeton Jct., NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.), Rahter, Anne O’Gorman (sr. Boonton, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth) and Baud.

Winters won the 100 (1:02.01) and 200 (2:12.53) yard backstrokes. She was also the winner (2:16.68) in the 200 yard individual medley. Schneider swam times of 2:04.73 and 5:30.45 for first places in the 200 and 500 yard freestyles respectively. Rahter had a first place (2:33.97) in the 200 yard breaststroke. She finished second (1:11.24) in the 100 yard breaststroke and Sam King (sr. Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) was third (1:13.91).

Julianne Furdyna (sr. Livingston, NJ/Livingston) won the 1000 yard freestyle (11:16.15). In the 100 yard butterfly, O’Gorman took first (1:03.08) and Charlene Gustafson (fr. Clifton, NJ/Clifton) was second (1:04.34). Baud came in first (26.08) in the 50 yard freestyle and she was second (57.16) in the 100 yard free. Stearns finished second (26.94) in the 50 yard freestyle and third (1:00.55) in the 100 yard free.

O’Gorman had a second place (2:19.50) in the 200 yard butterfly while Gustafson was third (2:22.88). Rowan had third places from Heather Sickler (sr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) in the 1000 yard freestyle (11:55.94), Adrienne Bush (fr. Silver Spring, MD/James Hubert Blake) in the 200 yard freestyle (2:09.18), Lauren Grajek (fr. Freehold, NJ/Freehold Twp.) in the 200 yard backstroke (2:21.76) and Lindsey Raleigh (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River S.) in the 100 yard backstroke (1:06.02).

Rowan hosts The College of New Jersey on Saturday, January 29 at 2 p.m. in the final conference meet of the season.
