Rowan Defeats New Jersey City, 55-47

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team defeated New Jersey City University, 55-47 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday afternoon.

The Profs have a 7-10 overall record and they are 2-5 in the conference. The Gothic Knights drop to 7-8 on the season and 2-4 in the NJAC. Guard Kendall White (so. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) led Rowan with 13 points and four blocked shots. Forward Steve Secula (jr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) posted a double-double with 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Guard Roger Loatman (jr. Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton) and Rich McNamara (fr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) added 11 and nine points respectively. Guard Sean Hughes (sr. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) grabbed eight boards.

For New Jersey City, guard Keith Williams (jr. Jersey City, NJ/Create Charter) compiled 13 points and six rebounds. Forward Tom McDermott (sr. Kearny, NJ/Kearny) totaled seven points and seven boards. Guard James Livingston (sr. Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) contributed with five points and five rebounds.

The Gothic Knights were ahead, 27-19 at halftime. New Jersey City opened the second period with six straight points for a 14 point advantage (33-19) at 16:46. Williams had five of the six points. Rowan answered with a 12-2 run to pull within four (35-31) at 12:53. Loatman scored five points, White followed with four and Hughes nailed a three-pointer. Livingston’s free throw at 12:16 stretched the lead to five (36-31).

Loatman’s layup at 10:07 made it a one point (36-35) game. Gothic Knights’ forward Walik Albright (so. Jersey City, NJ/Create Charter) sunk one of two foul shots at 9:39. McNamara’s two free throws at 7:58 tied the game at 37. Guard Naadir Williams (so. Newark, NJ/Weequahic) had a layup at 6:23 to put New Jersey City ahead by three (40-37). The Profs scored the next eight points to go up, 45-40 with 4:01 remaining. McNamara had four of the eight points.

The score was 49-44 with 55 seconds left. Williams nailed a three-pointer (:28) to bring the Gothic Knights within two (49-47). White recorded a layup and a foul shot at the 22 second mark. Hughes made three of four free throws in the final 16 seconds to seal the victory. McNamara and Loatman each scored nine points in the second stanza.

At 14:13 in the first half, the game was tied (5-5). New Jersey City went ahead by three (14-11) following a jumper by forward Taquan Abdullah (jr. Kenilworth, NJ/David Brearley) at 7:19. White’s layup at 4:51 cut the deficit to one (18-17). The Gothic Knights closed out the period with a 9-2 run. McDermott registered four points, Livingston and Williams each had two and guard Ashmere Wilson (so. Newark, NJ/Weequahic) made a foul shot. Secula totaled eight points and 11 boards in the half. McDermott tallied six points for New Jersey City.
