MAHWAH, NJ – The Rowan University men’s and women’s swim teams defeated New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent Ramapo College on Sunday afternoon. The Prof men won 145-117 while the women had a 151-88 victory.
Both the Rowan men and women are 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference. The Roadrunner men have a 3-4 record while the women are 3-5 overall. The Ramapo men and women each have a 0-3 conference mark.
The Rowan women took first place in 11 of the 12 individual events and won both relays. The 200 yard medley relay had a winning time of 1:56.84 with the team of Kate Winters (sr. Princeton Jct., NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.), Anne O’Gorman (sr. Boonton, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth), Stacey Rahter (sr. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.) and Teresa Stearns (so. Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit). The 400 yard freestyle relay was first in 3:50.47. The free relay included Winters, Stearns, Allison Schneider (fr. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) and Charlene Gustafson (fr. Clifton, NJ/Clifton).
Winters, Rahter and Schneider each won two individual races. Winters was first in the 100 (1:02.93) and 200 (2:13.79) backstrokes. Rahter came in first in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:34.37) and the 50 yard freestyle (26.70). Schneider had first places in the 200 (2:05.34) and 500 (5:34.84) freestyles.
Samantha King (sr. Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) won the 100 yard breaststroke (1:13.86) and was second in the 200 individual medley (2:23.61). Julianne Furdyna (sr. Livingston, NJ/Livingston) captured first in the 1000 yard freestyle (11:21.77) while Stearns was the winner in the 100 yard free (58.15). Gustafson finished first (2:18.49) in the 200 yard butterfly.
The Prof women took first, second and third in the 100 yard butterfly. O’Gorman won with a time of 1:03.13 followed by Gustafson and Michelle Dunn (jr. Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) in 1:03.22 and 1:10.77 respectively. Heather Sickler (sr. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) was second (12:05.21) in the 1000 yard freestyle and Christie Carroll (fr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) finished fourth (12:35.80). Adrienne Bush (fr. Silver Spring, MD/James Hubert Blake) had a third place (2:28.99) in the 200 yard individual medley. Caroline Lewis (sr. Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) took third (2:12.87) in the 200 yard freestyle.
The Rowan men captured first in seven individual events and in the 400 yard freestyle relay. The freestyle relay won in 3:23.66 with Jerry Capriotti (fr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland), Jake Scaramazza (fr. Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown), Tim Dimond (so. Allentown, PA/Emmaus) and Bill Malone (jr. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic). The 200 yard medley relay was second with a time of 1:41.90. The medley relay consisted of Stefan Pietrobono (so. Newark, DE/Brandywine), Dan Bower (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), Capriotti and Scaramazza.
Dimond registered first places in the 200 yard backstroke (2:00.93) and the 1000 yard freestyle (10:44.35). He was also second (55.19) in the 100 yard butterfly. Malone won the 100 (50.65) and 200 (1:48.44) yard freestyles. Bower came in first (1:04.11) in the 100 yard breaststroke and he was second (2:23.80) in the 200 yard breaststroke. Michael Brooks (sr. Brigantine, NJ/Holy Spirit) was the winner in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:09.98. He also had a second place (1:52.13) in the 200 yard freestyle. Capriotti took first (22.68) in the 50 yard free and Malone was third (23.03).
Scaramazza came in second (50.88) in the 100 yard freestyle and was third (1:52.95) in the 200 free. Pietrobono had a second place (56.17) in the 100 yard backstroke. Ryan Walker (so. Union, NJ/Union Catholic) took second (2:11.87) in the 200 individual medley. Brian McDermott (sr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergen Catholic) finished second (2:11.61) in the 200 yard butterfly and he was fourth (2:13.18) in the 200 individual medley.
Kyle Banks (so. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) took third in the 500 (5:21.07) and 1000 (11:07.34) yard freestyles. The Profs had fourth places from Ryan Hennessy (fr. Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) and Richard Del Valle (sr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) in the 100 (56.60) and 200 (2:17.45) yard butterflies respectively. Dan Choyce (fr. Sicklerville, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) was fourth (2:27.50) in the 200 yard breaststroke and Bradly Hawkins (fr. Millville, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) had a fourth place (59.76) in the 100 yard backstroke.
Rowan travels to the University of Scranton on Monday, January 17 for a 6 p.m. nonconference meet.
