GLASSBORO, NJ – The Montclair State University men’s basketball team defeated Rowan University, 75-56 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Hawks improve to 13-4 overall and 3-2 in the conference. The Profs have a 6-9 record with a 1-4 NJAC mark. Guard Rodney Freeney (sr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) led the way with 21 points, including four three points (six attempts). Forward Andrew August (jr. Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) registered a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Forward Tyrone Prewitt (sr. Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) compiled 15 points and eight boards. Forward Sean Young (sr. Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) contributed with nine points off the bench.
For Rowan, guard Rich McNamara (fr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) scored 11 points. Guard Roger Loatman (jr. Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton) followed with 10 points and three steals. Guard Kendall White (so. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) chipped in with nine points.
The Profs were up, 8-7 after a layup by guard Jason Rosenberg (fr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) at 17:45 in the first half. The Red Hawks went on an 11-0 run for a 10 point advantage (18-8) at 13:54. August recorded four points, Freeney hit a three-pointer and guard Michael Price (fr. Plainfield, NJ/Plainfield) and Prewitt added one basket apiece.
Rowan fought back with nine straight points to pull within one (18-17) at 9:59. White tallied five of the nine points. Montclair State scored the next eight points for a 26-17 lead. Freeney and Young each had three points and August had two. Price’s jumper at 1:54 made the score, 34-23. Prewitt had a foul shot with one second remaining to put the Red Hawks ahead, 37-25 at the intermission. August collected 10 points and seven rebounds in the period.
Montclair State scored the first five points of the second half for a 17 point advantage (42-25) at 18:14. Freeney’s three-pointer at 14:58 extended the lead to 20 (49-29). McNamara nailed a three at 9:49 to bring Rowan within 16 (57-41). It was the closest the Profs would come. Guard Tom Bonard (sr. Westfield, NJ/Westfield) sank two free throws at 4:35 to give the Red Hawks their largest lead of the game, 69-45. Freeney and August posted 12 and 10 points respectively in the period. McNamara scored 11 for Rowan.
Rowan travels to Richard Stockton College on Wednesday, January 19 for an 8 p.m. NJAC game.
