Rowan Defeats Rutgers-Camden, 64-61 in Overtime

CAMDEN, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team had a 64-61 overtime victory against New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday night.

With 28 seconds left in regulation, guard Roger Loatman (jr. Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton) made a three-pointer that tied the score at 48. In overtime, Rowan was ahead, 54-52 with 2:48 remaining after two free throws by Scarlet Raptors’ guard Woody Redding (fr. Philadelphia, PA/Northeast Catholic). Loatman sank two foul shots (2:17) and guard Sean Hughes (sr. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) had one (2:02) to extend the lead to five (57-52). Rutgers-Camden guard Eric Goode (sr. Newark, NJ/University) hit two free throws at 1:53, but Rowan forward Steve Secula (jr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) answered with a layup (1:46) to make the score, 59-54.

Two foul shots by guard Anthony Solano (jr. Garfield, NJ/Wood-Ridge) and one by Goode cut the deficit to two (59-57) with 1:39 left to play. Profs’ guard Rich McNamara (fr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) made a free throw (1:19) and Goode followed with two (1:14) to bring Rutgers-Camden with one. Hughes converted two shots from the charity stripe (:31) and forward Tom Paterno (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) had a layup (:18). Scarlet Raptors’ guard Joe Bush (jr. Piscataway, NJ/Somerset County Vo-Tech) recorded a layup with five seconds on the clock to end the scoring.

Rowan improves to 6-8 overall and 1-3 in the conference. Rutgers-Camden has a 2-11 record and a 1-4 NJAC mark. Loatman totaled 15 points, seven rebounds and six steals. Secula followed with 13 points. Hughes registered nine points, four rebounds and three steals. Guard Jason Rosenberg (fr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) compiled five assists and four steals.

For the Scarlet Raptors, Solano and Goode each tallied 10 points. Guard Kyle Bowman (fr. Camden, NJ/Collingswood) added nine points. Center Jared Meredith (sr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Burlington County Institute of Technology) posted eight points and eight rebounds, while forward Kevin Brown (sr. Port Norris, NJ/Millville) grabbed nine boards.

Rutgers-Camden was up 28-16 at halftime. Rowan opened the second period with a 10-0 run that ended at 12:51. Hughes and Secula each scored four points, while Paterno had two. The Scarlet Raptors answered with a 5-0 surge to increase the lead to seven (33-26) at 10:54. McNamara’s three-pointer (8:58) brought the Profs within two (35-33). Secula had a layup at 7:44 that gave Rowan a one point advantage (37-36).

Forward Alex Rislin’s (sr. Union, NJ/Union) foul shot (7:23) tied the game at 37. The game was knotted (39-39) at 5:45. Bowman nailed a three-pointer (5:09) and Meredith had a layup (2:45) to put the Scarlet Raptors up by five (44-39). Guard Kendall White (so. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) and Loatman had back-to-back baskets at 2:21 and 2:02 respectively to cut the deficit to one (44-43). Meredith’s layup with 1:07 on the clock gave Rutgers-Camden a three point edge (48-45). Loatman made a three-pointer with 28 seconds remaining to force overtime.

The Scarlet Raptors jumped out to a 14-5 advantage over the first 9:59 of the game. Solano scored six of the 14 points. Rutgers-Camden was ahead, 19-12 at 4:44. The Scarlet Raptors outscored the Profs 9-4 to close out the half.

Rowan hosts NJAC opponent Montclair State University on Saturday, January 15 at 3 p.m.
