GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rutgers-Camden men’s soccer team had a 3-1 victory over Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday night. The game was called with 6:08 remaining in the second half because of lightning.
Rutgers-Camden improves to 6-3-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference. Rowan has a 3-4-2 record with a 0-2 NJAC mark. Midfielder Andrew Filewicz (sr. Deptford, NJ/Northeast Catholic (PA)) and C.J. Finley (so. Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) each had a goal for the Scarlet Raptors. Rutgers-Camden’s also scored on an own goal. For the Profs, forward Julian Berrios (so. Lakewood, NJ/Calvary Academy) found the net. Forward Devon Garner (fr. Browns Mills, NJ/Pemberton Twp.) had one assist.
Rowan took 16 shots and Rutgers-Camden had 13. Scarlet Raptors’ goalkeeper Tim VanLiew (jr. Deptford, NJ/Deptford) made four saves. Goalkeeper Charlie Cunliffe (sr. Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood) stopped three shots in 61:20 for the Profs. Goalkeeper Michael Fanz-Huster (so. Waterford, NJ/Hammonton) played the final 22:32.
At 9:24 in the first period, Filewicz shot the ball into the left corner of the net to put Rutgers-Camden ahead, 1-0. Finley scored on a penalty kick at 27:40. Berrios cut the deficit to one (2-1) with an assist from Garner at 34:00. At 58:05 in the second period, Scarlet Raptors’ midfielder Casey Doyle (so. West Orange, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) sent a shot into the box from 35 yards out and it was knocked into the net by a Profs’ defender.
Rowan travels to New Jersey City University for a conference game on Saturday, September 22 at 1 p.m.
