Montclair State Wins 5-0 Over Rowan In NJAC Contest

MONTCLAIR, NJ – The Montclair State University men’s soccer team won 5-0 over Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game on Thursday night.

The Red Hawks are 4-1-2 while the Profs have a 3-3-1 record. It was the first conference game of the season for both teams.

Midfielder Mike Pytlar (jr. Califon, NJ/West Morris) scored two goals while forward Larry Geraghty (sr. Cranford, NJ/St. Benedict’s Prep) contributed with one goal and one assist. Backs Matt Slattery (fr. Newtown, CT/Newtown) and Thomas Benack (sr. Sparta, NJ/Lenape Valley) each scored once. Midfielder Dan Mendoza (fr. Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack) added two assists while midfielder William O’Connor (so. Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) had one.

Slattery scored Montclair State’s first goal at 12:10. He headed in a corner kick by Geraghty. Pytlar had the second just under five minutes later and Mendoza assisted. Benack hit the left side of the Profs’ net from 15 yards out at 38:14 after a feed from O’Connor.

In the second half, Pytlar recorded his second goal at 45:38 when he intercepted a backpass by a Prof defender. At 57:06, Geraghty hit the top right corner of the goal and Mendoza had his second assist.

The Red Hawks totaled 14 shots and the Profs had three. Goalie Anthony Rogic (so. Boonton, NJ/Morris Catholic) stopped two shots for his third shutout on the season. For Rowan, goalies Charlie Cunliffe (sr. Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood) and Michael Fanz-Huster (so. Waterfront, NJ/Hammonton) combined for four saves.

Next, Rowan hosts the University of Scranton on Saturday, September 18 at 7 p.m.
