VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Rowan University men’s soccer team lost to third ranked Christopher Newport University, 5-0 on the first day of the Chick-Fil-A Invitational. The two-day tournament is being held at Virginia Wesleyan University.
Christopher Newport improves to 4-0, while Rowan has a 3-1-1 record. In the other game on Friday, Kean University plays Virginia Wesleyan at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, September 11, Christopher Newport takes on Kean at 5 p.m. and Rowan faces Virginia Wesleyan at 7:30 p.m.
For the Captains, forwards Andrew Bonorden (so. Yorktown, VA/Grafton) and Alex Makumbi (fr. Kampala, Uganda/Robinson Secondary) each scored two goals. Forward Steven Farmer (jr. Poquoson, VA/Poquoson) contributed with one goal. Midfielder Brian Lybert (jr. Honolulu, HI/Woodbridge (VA)) tallied three assists, while midfielder Caleb Lewis (fr. Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) had one.
Christopher Newport out shot Rowan, 23-2. Captains’ goalkeeper Justin Wolfe (jr. Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette) played the entire game to earn his third shutout of the season. Profs’ goalkeeper Charlie Cunliffe (sr. Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood) made six saves in 58:51. Goalkeeper Michael Fanz-Huster (so. Waterford, NJ/Hammonton) played the final 31:09 and stopped four shots.
Bonorden knocked in a pass from Lybert at 11:20 in the first period to give Christopher Newport a 1-0 lead. In the second half, Farmer shot the ball in the left corner of the net at 47:30 for a 2-0 advantage. Bonorden’s second goal came at 56:14 and Makumbi headed in a pass from Lewis 36 seconds later to make the score 4-0. At 58:51, Makumbi had an unassisted goal.
