GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team had a 70-49 victory over The College of New Jersey in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday night.
The Profs improve to 15-6 overall and 6-4 in the conference. The Lions have a 12-9 record with a 4-6 NJAC mark. Rowan was led by forward Gary Foster (so. Neptune, NJ/Neptune) with a career-high 14 points and 11 rebounds. Guard A.J. Greenwald (fr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) added 13 points, six rebounds and three steals. Forward Tyson Hartnett (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) contributed with 11 points off the bench. Forward Steve Secula (so. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) totaled eight points and eight boards.
For TCNJ, guard Jay Frank (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) compiled 12 points and seven rebounds. Forward Steve Siracusa (jr. New Providence, NJ/New Providence) registered nine points and nine boards. Guard Al Matlock (so. Trenton, NJ/Solebury Prep) scored eight points.
In the first half, the score was tied four times with the last one coming at 6:47 (20-20). Rowan closed out the period with a 12-2 run for a 32-22 halftime advantage. Hartnett and Greenwald each scored four points in the surge, while forward Tim Matchett (jr. Pitman, NJ/Pitman) and Secula both had a basket. Hartnett led all first half scorers with nine points and Greenwald added eight.
In the second stanza, forward Derek Piccini’s (sr. Ridgefield, NJ/Ridgefield Mem.) free throw at 18:43 increased the lead to 14 (36-22). Rowan was ahead, 38-26 at 17:13. TCNJ had an 11-2 surge to pull within three (40-37) at 13:34. Frank recorded six points, Matlock had three and guard William Jett (sr. Browns Mills, NJ/Pemberton) converted a tip-in. Piccini scored on a layup (13:19) and guard Allen Pritchett (sr. Camden, NJ/Woodbury) nailed a three-pointer (11:35) to put Rowan up by eight (45-37). Pritchett’s three at 10:09 gave the Profs an 11 point lead (50-39).
At the nine minute mark, Siracusa sunk two free throws to bring TCNJ within 10 (52-42). Rowan scored six straight points for a 58-42 advantage (7:29). Foster had four points and Greenwald followed with two. Jett’s layup with 3:57 remaining cut the deficit to 14 (61-47), but Rowan finished the game with a 9-2 run. Secula posted four points, Greenwald added two and guard Kendall White (fr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) made a layup. Foster compiled 10 points and six rebounds in the second half.
Rowan travels to Kean University on Saturday, February 6 for a 3 p.m. conference game.
