NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – The Rowan University men’s swimming and diving team took third place and the women finished sixth at the Metropolitan Championships. The three-day championships were held at Rutgers University.
On Sunday, Samantha Rottkamp (so. Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) won the one meter diving with 434.20 points. In the men’s three meter, Zach Castelli (so. Ventnor, NJ/Atlantic City) was third (464.25) followed by Mark Balesteri (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) fourth (441.40) and Kyle Bianchini (jr. Blackwood, NJ/Highland Reg.) sixth (368.05).
The women’s 400 yard freestyle relay came in fifth with a time of 3:43.23. The relay included Stacey Rahter (jr. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.), Kate Winters (jr. Princeton Jct., NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.), Teresa Stearns (fr. Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit) and Lauren Hauser (sr. Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston). The men’s 400 yard freestyle relay took sixth place in 3:14.64. Bill Malone (so. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), Steve Tucker (sr. Pittsgrove, NJ/Sacred Heart), Dan Bower (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) and Tim Dimond (fr. Allentown, PA/Emmaus) were on the relay.
Winters finished third in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:08.12. Her time was a NCAA B cut (2:09.04) and also a school record. Winters broke the mark of 2:08.27 by Donna Restivo in 1995. Julie Furdyna (jr. Livingston, NJ/Livingston) came in third in the 1650 yard freestyle (18:19.04). Rahter (jr. had an eighth place (2:31.71) in the 200 yard breaststroke. Anne O’Gorman (jr. Boonton, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth) took 12th in the 200 yard butterfly (2:16.53).
Tucker was seventh in the 200 yard butterfly (2:00.11). In the 1650 yard freestyle, Kyle Banks (fr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) finished ninth (17:20.85) and Charlie Borny (fr. Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) followed 10th (17:29.63). Brian McDermott (jr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergen Catholic) was 10th in the 200 yard backstroke (2:00.19). He also had an 11th place in the 200 yard butterfly (2:02.80). Bower came in 12th in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:17.73). Malone and Dimond were 15th (48.48) and 16th (48.58) respectively in the 100 yard freestyle.
