NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ – The Rowan University men and women’s swimming and diving teams competed at the Metropolitan Championships on Friday. The three-day championships continue on Saturday and Sunday, February 20-21 at Rutgers University.
After one day of competition, the Rowan men are in third place with 285.5 points out of 11 schools. The women have 231 points for fifth among 11 schools.
Tim Dimond (fr. Allentown, PA/Emmaus) came in second in the 500 yard freestyle. His time of 4:38.24 was better than the NCAA B cut time (4:38.98). Dimond also broke the school record (4:43.50) that he set this season. Bill Malone (so. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) had a ninth place in the 50 yard free in 21.94. Michael Brooks (jr. Brigantine, NJ/Holy Spirit) finished 12th in the 500 yard freestyle (4:52.41) and Kyle Banks (fr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) was 14th (4:52.99). Dan Bower (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) was 15th overall in the 200 yard individual medley (2:01.67).
Samantha Rottkamp (so. Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) took second in the women’s three meter diving with 404.65 points. Mark Balesteri (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) was third (429.35 points) in the men’s one meter diving while Kyle Bianchini (jr. Blackwood, NJ/Highland Reg.) and Zach Castelli (so. Ventnor, NJ/Atlantic City) were fourth (377.50 points) and fifth (352.55 points) respectively.
In the 200 yard individual medley, Stacy Rahter (jr. Somer Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.) took sixth place (2:11.33) followed by Kate Winters (jr. Princeton Jct., NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.) seventh (2:11.56). Rahter’s time was a school record that was previously held by Winters (2:11.83). Lauren Hauser (sr. Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston) was 11th in the 50 yard freestyle (25.35).
The men’s 200 yard freestyle relay was fifth in 1:26.38 with the team of Stefan Pietrobono (fr. Newark, DE/Brandywine), Bower, Malone and Steve Tucker (sr. Pittsgrove, NJ/Sacred Heart). The 400 yard medley relay of Pietrobono, Bower, Brian McDermott (jr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergen Catholic) and Dimond was sixth (3:34.82).
The women’s 200 yard freestyle relay finished in sixth place with a time of 1:42.06. The free relay included Rahter, Hauser, Teresa Stearns (fr. Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit) and Anne O’Gorman (jr. Boonton, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth). The 400 yard medley relay came in fifth (4:05.61) with Winters, Rahter, O’Gorman and Stearns. In the 500 yard freestyle, Julie Furdyna (jr. Livingston, NJ/Livingston) took 10th in 5:19.71.
