SWARTHMORE, PA – The Rowan University men’s and women’s swim teams finished in first place at the Swarthmore College Invitational on Saturday night. The men totaled 930 points while the women had 735 points.
The men won the 400 and 800 yard freestyle relays with times of 3:12.10 and 7:11.61 respectively. The 400 free relay consisted of Bill Malone (jr. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), Jerry Capriotti (fr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland), Jake Scarmazza (fr. Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) and Tim Dimond (so. Allentown, PA/Emmaus). Dimond, Kyle Banks (so. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro), Michael Brooks (sr. Brigantine, NJ/Holy Spirit) and Malone were on the 800 freestyle relay. The 200 yard medley relay had a winning time of 1:38.58 with Stefan Pietrobono (so. Newark, DE/Brandywine), Dan Bower (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), Dimond and Capriotti.
The women took first place (1:52.69) in the 200 yard medley relay with Kate Winters (sr. Princeton Jct., NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.), Stacey Rahter (sr. Somers Point NJ/Mainland Reg.), Anne O’Gorman (sr. Boonton, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth) and Teresa Stearns (so. Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit). The 400 yard freestyle relay finished second (3:42.65) and the 800 yard freestyle relay came in third (8:19.87). The 400 free relay included Allison Schneider (fr. Cranford, NJ/Cranford), Winters, Rahter and Stearns. Winters, Schneider, Charlene Gustafson (fr. Clifton, NJ/Clifton) and Julianne Furdyna (sr. Livingston, NJ/Livingston) were on the 800 freestyle relay.
Dimond was the winner in the 100 yard butterfly (53.17) and the 200 yard backstroke (1:58.42). Bower had first places in the 100 (58.99) and 200 (2:12.81) yard breaststrokes. Malone won the 100 (46.97) and 200 (1:43.99) yard freestyles. Pietrobono took first in the 100 yard backstroke in 54.27.
In the 100 yard butterfly, Capriotti finished second (54.24) followed by Brian McDermott (sr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergen Catholic) third (54.93). McDermott also had second places in the 200 yard butterfly (2:01.05) and 200 yard backstroke (2:01.57). Kevin Sheridan (jr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) came in second in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:03.87).
Winters won the 400 yard individual medley (4:44.63) and the 200 yard backstroke (2:10.82). Rahter took first in the 100 (1:07.01) and 200 (2:25.90) yard breaststrokes. O’Gorman finished first (2:14.35) in the 200 yard butterfly and was third (1:01.22) in the 100 yard butterfly.
In the 1650 yard freestyle, Schneider was the winner with a time of 18:10.38 followed by Furdyna second (18:39.44). Lindsey Raleigh (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River S.) had a second place (1:03.77) in the 100 yard backstroke.
Next week, Rowan travels to Kings Point, NY on Saturday, December 11 for a 2 p.m. meet. The men will compete against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy while the women swim against C.W. Post.
