GLASSBORO, NJ – Four players scored in double figures to give Valley Forge Christian College a 77-68 win over Rowan University in a nonconference game on Thursday night.
The Patriots improve to 8-3, while the Profs have a 3-4 record. Forward Shawn Taylor (sr. Philadelphia, PA/USC Aiken) compiled 17 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Guard Justin Kinsey (jr. Philadelphia, PA/Manor College) scored 15 points, while forward Michael Stum (jr. Manheim, PA/Manheim Central) totaled 14 points and 10 rebounds. Guard James Franklin (jr. Philadelphia, PA/Lackawanna College) added 11 points. Guard Steve Sims (so. Willow Grove, PA/Arbington) posted nine points. Forward Latrell Alford (jr. Chrisfield, MD/Community College of Baltimore County-Cantonsville) registered eight points and eight rebounds.
For Rowan, guard Sean Hughes (sr. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) scored 19 points. Guard Kendall White (so. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) had a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Guard Rich McNamara (fr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) pulled down 10 boards and guard Laud Anderson (sr. North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick Twp.) had eight.
Valley Forge Christian led 46-33 at halftime. Stum’s layup at 16:02 put the Patriots up by 17 points (53-36). Rowan went on a 7-0 run to pull within 10 (53-43) at 14:03. White scored five of the seven points. Valley Forge Christian was ahead, 62-52 at 7:58. White had a three point play that made the score, 62-55 (6:46). The Patriots answered with layups by Taylor (6:28) and Alford (5:48).
Alford’s layup at 4:11 gave Valley Forge Christian a 68-57 lead. The Profs had five straight points to cut the deficit to six (68-62) with 2:36 remaining. Forward Steve Secula (jr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) and White each had two points and guard Roger Loatman (jr. Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton) sunk a free throw. Taylor nailed a layup and foul shot at 2:13 for a 71-62 advantage. Hughes made two free throws (1:59) and McNamara had a layup (1:10) to bring the Profs within five (71-66).
Franklin sunk two foul shots (:57) and Sims had one (:41). After Franklin hit one more free throw (:26), Secula’s jumper at the 19 second mark made the score, 75-68. Stum’s layup with 12 seconds left sealed the win. Hughes scored 12 points in the second period and White had 10.
The Patriots began the game with an 11-4 run over the first 3:47. Sims tallied four points, Stum hit a three-pointer and Kinsey added a jumper. Stum’s layup at 15:55 gave Valley Forge Christian a nine point advantage (13-4). Rowan had an 8-0 surge to come within one (13-12) at 14:11. White and Hughes each made a three-pointer and guard Akeem Johnson (jr. Gouldtown, NJ/Bridgeton) sunk two free throws. The Patriots followed with a 9-0 run to take a 22-12 lead with 12:02 on the clock. Taylor had eight of the nine points.
Johnson’s three-pointer at 11:06 brought the Profs within seven (22-15). Valley Forge Christian scored 10 straight points to go up by 17 (32-15) at 8:09. Stum led the way with five points in the run. Rowan had a 9-0 surge to pull within eight (32-24) with 6:11 remaining. Anderson recorded five of the nine points.
The Patriots had the next 14 points to take a 22 point lead (46-24) at 3:32. Kinsey scored eight points and Franklin made two three-pointers. The Profs closed out the half with nine consecutive points to make the score, 46-33 at the intermission. White collected five points and Hughes had four. Kinsey registered 11 points in the period, while Stum and Taylor had 10 apiece.
