KINGS POINT, NY – The Rowan University men’s swimming and diving team defeated the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, 164.5-129.5 on Saturday.
The Profs took first place with a time of 1:38.76 in the 200 yard medley relay with Stefan Pietrobono (so. Newark, DE/Brandywine), Dan Bower (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), Ryan McNally (sr. Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) and Jerry Capriotti (fr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland). The 400 yard freestyle relay was first in 3:12.60. The free relay consisted of Bill Malone (jr. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), Jake Scaramazza (fr. Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown), Capriotti and Tim Dimond (so. Allentown, PA/Emmaus).
Malone won three individual events. He swam a school record time of 1:42.55 in the 200 yard freestyle. The old mark was 1:43.41 by Mike Wilkinson (February 1999). His time (46.77) in the 100 yard freestyle was a career best. He also took first in the 50 yard freestyle in 21.79.
Dimond was the winner in the 100 yard butterfly (53.90), the 200 yard backstroke (2:02.55) and the 1000 yard freestyle (10:20.38). Pietrobono came in first (55.05) in the 100 yard backstroke. Bower finished first (1:00.62) in the 100 yard breaststroke and he was second (2:17.23) in the 200 yard breaststroke.
Brian McDermott (sr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergen Catholic) had second places in the 200 yard butterfly (2:01.59) and the 200 yard backstroke (2:02.77). Kyle Banks (so. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) took second (10:36.20) in the 1000 yard freestyle. In the one meter diving, Mark Balesteri (sr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) finished second (271.05 points) followed by Kyle Bianchini (sr. Blackwood, NJ/Highland Reg.) fourth (156.80 points).
In the backstroke, Mike Demarest (fr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami) came in second in the 100 (57.52) and third in the 200 (2:04.39). Kevin Sheridan (jr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) was third (49.35) in the 100 yard freestyle. Jeff Terrell (so. Lindwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) had a third place (2:06.66) in the 200 yard butterfly. Dan Choyce (fr. Sicklerville, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) finished third (2:23.71) in the 200 yard breaststroke and Michael Brooks (sr. Brigantine, NJ/Holy Spirit) took third (1:49.10) in the 200 yard freestyle.
After the holidays, Rowan will train for a week, January 5-12 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
