GLASSBORO, NJ – The Berkeley College men’s basketball team defeated Penn State Brandywine, 64-62 in the consolation game of the Heritage’s Dairy Stores Classic. The tournament was held at Rowan University.
Rowan and Gwynedd-Mercy meet in the championship game. In the first round on Friday, Gwynedd-Mercy won 86-57 over Berkeley while Rowan had an 88-69 victory against Penn State Brandywine.
Berkeley was led by forward Andrew Webber (fr. Columbus, OH/Thomas Worthington) with 16 points and nine rebounds. Guards Gary Williams (so. Jersey City, NJ/Marist) and Brandon Stewart (fr. Somerville, NJ/Somerville) contributed with 12 points apiece. Williams also registered six boards, three assists and three steals. Center Justin Savage (so. Newark, NJ/Kearny Christian Academy) totaled 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Guard Justin Lewandowski (sr. Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown Reg.) chipped in with nine points while forward Ramante Mosley (fr. Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton) grabbed nine rebounds.
For the Lions, guard Rasheed Wilkins scored a game-high 17 points and he pulled down 10 boards. Forward Learon Pray accumulated 15 points and 13 rebounds. Guard T.J. Hazinsky added 15 points. Guard/forward Mike McGlynn and forward Harold Gordon collected eight and seven rebounds respectively.
In the second half, Williams’ layup at 16:33 put Berkeley up by eight points (39-31). The Knights had a 10 point advantage (50-40) at 10:40 after a layup by center Andre Javis (jr. Hillside, NJ/Union). Penn State Brandywine followed with a 9-2 run to pull within three points (52-49) with 8:20 remaining. Pray scored four points while guard Maurice Jackson made a three and McGlynn had two points. The score was tied at 55 after a layup by Pray at 4:24. Berkeley came back with six straight points to lead 61-55 with 1:38 left. Stewart hit a three (3:58), Williams followed with a foul shot (3:23) and Savage had layup (1:38). Wilkins cut the deficit to one (61-60) with a layup at the 45 second mark. With nine seconds on the clock, he had two free throws and the Lions trailed 63-62. Lewandowski made the first of two foul shots (:08) for the final score (64-62).
The score was tied twice in the first half before the Knights took the lead. Forward Dave Segura’s jumper knotted the score at eight with 17:30 on the clock. Berkeley pulled away with 13 straight points to lead 21-8 at 13:38. Webber contributed with five points in the surge. His layup at 10:57 put Berkeley ahead by 11 points (23-12). The Lions followed with a 9-0 run to pull within two points (23-21) with 7:27 remaining. Hazinsky (8:18) and Wilkins (7:27) had back-to-back three-pointers.
Savage’s basket and foul shot at 5:55 put the Knights back up by seven points (28-21). At the 59 second mark, Wilkins hit a jumper and Penn State Brandywine trailed 33-27. Williams ended the period with two free throws with three seconds left. Berkeley was ahead 35-27 at the break. Webber was in double figures with 12 points.
