GLASSBORO, NJ – The Gwynedd-Mercy College men’s basketball team won 86-57 over Berkeley College in the first round of the Heritage’s Dairy Stores Classic on Friday night. The classic is being held at Rowan University.
Gwynedd-Mercy (5-2) meets the winner of the Rowan/Penn State Brandywine game in the championship on Saturday at 3 p.m. Prior, Berkeley (1-6) plays in the consolation game at 1 p.m.
The Griffins had four players that scored in double figures. Forward Jon Hogga (sr. Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) recorded game-highs with 19 points and eight rebounds. Guard Dan Delconte (jr. Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) contributed with 14 points while guards Jon Crabtree (sr. Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville) and Brandyn Wims (fr. Philadelphia, PA/Cardinal Dougherty) added 13 apiece. Wims also dished five assists and grabbed five boards. Forward Brandon Sharp (jr. Hammonton, NJ/St. Joseph’s) chipped in with six points and six rebounds.
For Berkeley, guard Gary Williams (so. Jersey City, NJ/Marist) scored 12 points. Forward Justin Savage (so. Newark, NJ/Kearny Christian Academy) and guard Brandon Stewart (fr. Somerville, NJ/Somerville) totaled 11 and 10 points respectively. Guard Andrew Webber (fr. Columbus, OH/Thomas Worthington) had nine points. Forward Ramante Mosley (fr. Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton) pulled down six rebounds.
Gwynedd-Mercy started the game with an 8-0 run in 2:54. Hogga made two baskets while forward Frank Champion (so. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) and DelConte each had one. Hogga’s tip-in at 14:06 made the score 14-5. The Griffins had a 17 point advantage at 7:42 after a jumper by Sharp. With 5:28 remaining, Delconte hit a three for a 20 point lead (36-16). He had the last two points of the half at the line (1:24). Gwynedd-Mercy was ahead 42-22 at the intermission. Hogga led all scorers with 12 points.
In the second stanza, Champion’s layup put the Griffins up 53-26. The lead was stretched to 31 points (69-38) at 11:28 after a free throw by guard Doug Berzins (so. Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford). Savage had a layup and foul shot at 5:20 and Berkeley trailed by 22 points (74-52). With 1:06 left, guard Brendan Stanton’s (so. Harleysville, PA/Lansdale Catholic) three put Gwynedd-Mercy back up by 31 points (85-54). Wims was the scoring leader in the final half with 11 points. Savage totaled 11 for the Knights.
