Rowan Tops Penn State Brandywine, 88-69 In First Round Of Heritage's Dairy Stores Classic

GLASSBORO, NJ – Five players scored in double figures to lead Rowan University to an 88-69 win over Penn State Brandywine in the first round of the Heritage’s Dairy Stores Classic on Friday night.

The Profs (4-5) advance to the championship against Gwynedd-Mercy College on Saturday, December 11 at 3 p.m. Prior, Penn State Brandywine (2-6) will face Berkeley College in the consolation at 1 p.m. In the other first round game on Friday, Gwynedd-Mercy beat Berkeley, 86-57.

Rowan guard Kendall White (so. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) scored a career-high 24 points. He made 12 of 16 field goals and added four steals. Guard Sean Hughes (sr. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) followed with 15 points, eight assists and six rebounds. Center Chris Gebhart (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) posted 14 points, while guard Laud Anderson (sr. North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick Twp.) had 13. Forward Steve Secula (jr. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) compiled 10 points and seven boards. Guard Jason Rosenberg (fr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) dished nine assists.

For the Lions, guard Rasheed Wilkins registered 17 points and eight rebounds. Guard/forward Mike McGlynn chipped in with 11 points, including three three-pointers. Forward Dave Segura totaled 10 points, six boards and four assists. Forward Tim Carroll scored nine points and forward Learon Pray pulled down six rebounds.

At halftime, the game with tied at 42. Hughes’ jumper at 18:58 gave Rowan a four point advantage (46-42). Guard TJ Hazinsky answered with a three-pointer at 18:16 to bring the Lions within one (46-45). Rowan went on a 7-0 run to lead, 53-45 at 15:32. Gebhart recorded five of the seven points.

The Profs were up, 55-48 after a foul shot by Wilkins. Rowan had an 8-0 surge to make the score, 63-48 with 12:55 on the clock. Secula tallied four points, while White and Hughes each had two. Penn State Brandywine cut the deficit to 11 (71-60) following a jumper by Wilkins at 7:15. It was the closest the Lions would come the rest of the way. The Profs’ largest lead of the game was 24 points at 3:45 (86-62) and 1:26 (88-64). Anderson scored 11 points in the second half, while White and Secula added 10 apiece.

In the first period, Rowan jumped out to a 17-6 advantage over the first 5:48. The score was 27-15 after a layup by Anderson at 9:29. The Lions went on an 18-6 run to tie the game (33-33) with 4:01 remaining. McGlynn nailed three three-pointers in the surge. Rosenberg’s layup at 1:03 put Rowan back up by four (42-38). Guard Maurice Jackson had a jumper (:42) and Wilkins added a layup (:01) tying the score (42-42) at the intermission.
