Men's Basketball Falls at Ramapo, 89-72 in NJAC Opener

MAHWAH, NJ – The Ramapo College men’s basketball team defeated visiting Rowan University, 89-72 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Tuesday night.

Guard Ahmad Hassan (jr. Edgewater, NJ/Leonia) led the Roadrunners with a game-high 33 points. Hassan was 10 for 15 from the floor with five three-pointers and eight of nine at the line. He also had five rebounds and four steals. Forward/center LaQuan Peterkin (jr. Paterson, NJ/John F. Kennedy) contributed with 24 points and 10 boards. Guard Travis Conyers (so. Jersey City, NJ/St. Anthony) added 10 points and dished six assists.

Ramapo is undefeated with a 5-0 record while Rowan is 3-3 overall. It was the first conference game of the season for both teams. For the Profs, guard Akeem Johnson (jr. Gouldtown, NJ/Bridgeton) scored a season-high 30 points. Center Chris Gebhart (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) totaled 16 points and 10 rebounds which were both season bests. Guard Jason Rosenberg (fr. Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) collected five assists and five steals. Guard Sean Hughes (sr. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) had nine points and guard Rich McNamara (fr. Southampton, NJ/Seneca) grabbed eight boards.

The Roadrunners had a 20 point lead (55-35) after the first half. At 18:08, Rosenberg made one foul shot and the Profs trailed 6-3. Ramapo followed with a 12-2 run to lead by 13 points (18-5) at 13:58. Peterkin scored 10 of the 12 points. Conyers’ jumper at 9:22 put Ramapo up by 16 points (32-16). Johnson hit a jumper at 6:34 and the Profs were down by 12 points (36-24). With 5:17 remaining, Hassan nailed a three for a 20 point advantage (46-26). Hughes’ three-pointer with 2:34 on the clock pulled Rowan within 16 points (48-32). Hassan registered 21 points in the first period while Peterkin had 16. Johnson totaled 12 points for the Profs.

In the second stanza, Ramapo led 65-46 at 14:41 after two foul shots by Hassan. Rowan scored eight straight points to cut the deficit to 11 (65-54) at 12:51. Johnson contributed with four points while guard Roger Loatman (jr. Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton) and Gebhart each had two. Peterkin’s layup at 7:50 made the score 74-59. The closest the Profs came for the remainder of the game was 13 points (76-63) after Gebhart’s layup at 6:34.

Next, Rowan plays at home against Valley Forge Christian College on Thursday, December 2 at 8 p.m.
