Rowan Swimming & Diving Sweeps William Paterson in First Conference Meet

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University swimming and diving teams swept conference opponent William Paterson University on Saturday. The men won 135-89 while the women had a 129-87 victory.

Both Prof teams are 1-1 overall while the Pioneer men and women each have a 0-1 record. It was the first New Jersey Athletic Conference meet of the season for Rowan and William Paterson.

The Rowan men took first place in the 200 yard medley relay (1:40.71) and the 400 yard freestyle relay (3:20.57). Stefan Pietrobono (so. Newark, DE/Brandywine), Dan Bower (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), Ryan McNally (sr. Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) and Jerry Capriotti (fr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland) were on the medley relay. The free relay included Mike Demarest (fr. Galloway, NJ/Absegami), Jake Scaramazza (fr. Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown), Bill Malone (jr. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and Capriotti.

Bower swam first places in the 200 yard individual medley (2:06.39) and 100 yard breaststroke (1:02.03). In the 200 yard freestyle, Malone came in first (1:48.23) followed by Mike Brooks (sr. Brigantine, NJ/Holy Spirit) second (1:51.97). Malone also won the 100 yard freestyle (48.42). Capriotti was the winner (22.45) in the 50 yard freestyle and McNally was second (23.03). McNally had a first place in the 100 butterfly (56.53).

Pietrobono was the winner in the 100 yard backstroke (55.62). Kyle Banks (so. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) won the 1000 yard freestyle (10:39.30). Ryan Walker (so. Union, NJ/Union Catholic) took second in the 200 individual medley (2:10.89) and Brian McDermott (sr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergen Catholic) finished second in the 100 butterfly (56.82).

Eddie Zappile (jr. Oak Ridge, NJ/Jefferson Twp.) won the 500 yard freestyle (5:10.43) for the Pioneers followed by Anthony Porzio (jr. Toms River, NJ/Toms River N.) second (5:31.32). Zappile also took second (10:49.23) in the 1000 yard freestyle. Brian Birkbeck (jr. Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit) finished second (53.42) in the 100 yard freestyle (53.42) and Tyler Grady (so. Ringwood, NJ/Lakeland Reg.) had a second place (58.69) in the 100 yard backstroke. Mazen Yousef (so. Toms River, NJ/Toms River E.) was second in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:06.44).

In the men’s diving, Rowan’s Mark Balesteri (sr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) was the winner in the one meter (226.65) and three meter (293.33). Kyle Bianchini (sr. Blackwood, NJ/Highland Reg.) took second in the one meter (210.68) for the Profs while Andrew Scimeca (sr. Lincoln Park, NJ/Morris County Tech) was second (196.05) in the three meter for the Pioneers. In the women’s diving, the Profs’ Sam Rottkamp (jr. Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) took first place in the one meter (236.25) and on the three meter board (228.83).

The Rowan women won the 200 yard medley relay (1:55.90) with the team of Kate Winters (sr. Princeton Jct., NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.), Stacey Rahter (sr. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.), Anne O’Gorman (sr. Boonton, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth) and Briana Baud (fr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford). The 400 yard freestyle relay swam a winning time of 3:50.98. Winters, Allison Schneider (fr. Cranford, NJ/Cranford), Baud and Teresa Stearns (so. Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit) were on the free relay.

Rahter was the winner in the 200 yard individual medley (2:15.68), 100 yard freestyle (56.53) and 100 yard breaststroke (1:09.89). Schneider finished first in the 1000 (11:16.26) and 500 (5:27.05) yard freestyles. Winters came in first in the 200 freestyle (2:01.52) and the 100 yard backstroke (1:03.72).

O’Gorman finished first in the 100 yard butterfly (1:02.20). In the 50 yard freestyle, Baud and Stearns were first (26.10) and second (26.17) respectively. Adrienne Bush (fr. Silver Spring, MD/James Hubert Blake) had a second place (2:25.15) in the 200 yard individual medley.

For the William Paterson women, Lauren Horowitz (sr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) had second places in the 1000 (12:47.00) and 500 (6:16.54) yard freestyles. Lesly Mendoza (jr. Passaic, NJ/Paramus Catholic) finished second in the 200 yard freestyle (2:12.85) and 100 yard butterfly (1:07.16). Giuliana Trapani (fr. Mountain Lakes, NJ/Mountain Lakes) came in second in the 100 yard freestyle (58.85) and Lauren Carney (fr. East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) was second in the 100 yard backstroke (1:08.64). Brett Kuchin (jr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.) took second in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:12.89).

Next, Rowan travels to Salisbury University on Tuesday, October 26 for a 6 p.m. nonconference meet.
