Army Defeats Rowan in Season Opener

WEST POINT, NY – The Army men’s and women’s swim teams defeated Rowan University on Saturday morning. The men had a 104-90 victory, while the women won, 106-91.

It was the first meet of the year for both schools. The Rowan men’s 200 freestyle relay of Jerry Capriotti (fr. Vineland, NJ/Vineland), Jake Scaramazza (fr. Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown), Tim Dimond (so. Allentown, PA/Emmaus) and Dan Bower (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) won with a time of 1:31.19.

Dimond was first in the 100 backstroke in 58.31. Ryan Walker (so. Union, NJ/Union Catholic) and Nate Parsley (jr. Newark, DE/Brandywine) followed second (1:00.87) and third (1:02.90) respectively. In the 500 freestyle, Bill Malone (jr. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) won with a time of 5:13.62. Michael Brooks (sr. Brigantine, NJ/Holy Spirit) was second (5:16.65) and Kyle Banks (so. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) took third (5:21.58). Bower captured first (1:03.44) in the 100 breaststroke. Bradly Hawkins (fr. Millville, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) place second (1:07.58) and Kevin Sheridan (jr. E. Brunswick, NJ/E. Brunswick) was third (1:07.61). In the 50 freestyle, Capriotti came in third place with at time of 22.31. Malone took second (48.37) in the 100 freestyle, followed by Scaramazza, third (49.50).

The women’s 200 freestyle relay won with a time of 1:47.67. The team consisted of Charlene Gustafson (fr. Clifton, NJ/Clifton), Teresa Stearns (so. Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit), Sam King (sr. Marmora, NJ/Ocean City) and Stacey Rahter (sr. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.). The 200 medley relay of Kate Winters (sr. Princeton Jct., NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.), Rahter, Anne O’Gorman (sr. Boonton, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth) and King came in second (2:02.06).

Allison Schneider (fr. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) won the 500 (5:31.87) and 1000 (11:14.58) freestyles. Rahter had a first place (1:10.31) in the 100 breaststroke. She was second (1:02.37) in the 100 individual medley. O’Gorman took second (1:02.07) in the 100 butterfly, while Winters was second (1:02.62) in the 100 backstroke.

Julianne Furdyna (sr. Livingstown, NJ/Livingston) and Katelynn Toomer (so. Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) were second (5:46.80) and third (5:51.12) respectively in the 500 freestyle. King came in second (1:15.82) in the 100 breaststroke, followed by Kym Romano (so. Ringoes, NJ/Hunterdon Central Reg.), third (1:17.47). Gustafson captured third place (2:06.67) in the 200 freestyle. Stearns finished third (26.52) in the 50 freestyle.

Rowan opens its conference schedule at home against William Paterson University on Saturday, October 23 at 2 p.m.
