Loiodice Scores Winning Goal Against Rutgers-Newark, 1-0

NEWARK, NJ – Midfielder John Loiodice scored the winning goal for the Rowan University men’s soccer team in a 1-0 victory over Rutgers-Newark in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.

In the first overtime, Loiodice (sr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) recorded the game-winner with 45 seconds left with a shot just inside the post. Midfielder Ryan Gordon (so. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill W.) had a breakaway run on the right side of the field and crossed the ball to Loiodice.

Rowan has a 4-10-2 record with a 1-6 conference mark. Rutgers-Newark is 8-6-1 overall and
1-5-1 in the NJAC. The Scarlet Raiders totaled 23 shots while the Profs took 10. Goalie Charlie Cunliffe (sr. Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood) stopped 10 shots for his fourth shutout. For Rutgers-Newark, goalkeeper Jonathan Frances (so. Chandler, AZ/Hamilton) made three saves.

Back Lou Buonocore (fr. Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) recorded a defender save for the Profs at 79:25. He covered the left side of the goal and stopped a shot by forward Jervis Witherspoon (so. South Orange, NJ/Columbia). His play was a major factor that sent the game into overtime.

Next week, Rowan plays at New York University on Wednesday, October 20 at 8 p.m.
