ASTON, PA – The Rowan University men’s basketball team defeated Valley Forge Christian College, 82-80 in the second round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. The classic was held at Neumann University.
Guard Allen Pritchett (sr. Camden, NJ/Woodbury) nailed a three-pointer that put Rowan ahead 78-77 at the 59 second mark. Forward Tyson Hartnett (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) added two foul shots (00:22) and guard Sean Hughes (jr. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) made two free throws (00:10) for a five point advantage (82-77). With one second left, guard Justin Kinsey hit a three for Valley Forge Christian.
On the night, Hartnett was 17 for 18 from the line. He ended the game with 23 points and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Pritchett contributed with 17 points. Forward Steve Secula (so. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) and Hughes each scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Rowan has a 10-2 record with a seven game win streak. Valley Forge Christian is 11-4 overall. For the Patriots, Kinsey scored a game-high 28 points and pulled down 12 boards. He was selected to the All-Tournament Team. Guards Latrell Alford and Mike Strum registered 17 and 15 points respectively. Guard Jerome Monroe was in double figures with 12 points.
In the final game of the classic, Neumann plays Penn State Brandywine. In the first round on Tuesday, Rowan won 79-46 over Penn State Brandywine and Valley Forge Christian beat Neumann, 74-68.
The Profs started the second half trailing by 14 points (43-29). Valley Forge Christian led by 13 points (45-32) at 17:31. Rowan then scored nine points in 3:12 to pull within four (45-41). Pritchett’s three at 12:58 cut the deficit to three points (49-46). His three-pointer at 10:23 gave the Profs the lead 55-53. He made two foul shots at 8:09 for a six point advantage (61-55). Monroe had two straight layups to go up 70-69 with 4:07 remaining. Hughes’ two free throws at 3:48 put Rowan on top by one (71-70). The score was tied two times before Kinsey gave the Patriots the lead (77-75) with two foul shots (1:55).
Valley Forge Christian started the game with a 17-6 run in 7:36. Strum’s three-pointer made the score 24-12 at the nine minute mark. Rowan trailed by seven points (24-17) after guard Laud Anderson (jr. N. Brunswick, NJ/N. Brunswick) had a layup and a free throw with 7:32 remaining. Kinsey answered with six points to increase the lead to 13 points (30-17). With 1:52 left, Hartnett’s two fouls shots pulled the Profs within 10 points (39-29). The Patriots hit four straight free throws to end the period.
Rowan returns to its conference schedule at Rutgers-Newark on Saturday, January 9 at 8 p.m.
