Rowan Swimming and Diving Teams Get Swept By TCNJ

EWING, NJ – The College of New Jersey men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams defeated Rowan University to win the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championships on Saturday. The men had a 177-122 victory, while the women won 183-110.

The Lion men improve to 9-1 overall and the women are 8-1. Both teams finished conference competition with a 4-0 mark. The Prof men are 5-4 overall, while the women have a 4-4 record. Both squads went 3-1 in the NJAC.

The Rowan men won the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:20.03. The team was comprised of Bill Malone (so. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), Steve Tucker (sr. Pittsgrove, NJ/Sacred Heart), Michael Brooks (jr. Brigantine, NJ/Holy Spirit) and Stefan Pietrobono (fr. Newark, DE/Brandywine). The 200 medley relay of Pietrobono, Dan Bower (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), Tim Dimond (fr. Allentown, PA/Emmaus) and Malone took second place (1:39.34).

Dimond was the winner in the 500 freestyle (4:55.19). He also came in second in the 200 freestyle (1:45.96) and third in the 100 freestyle (48.66). Bower won the 200 individual medley (IM) with a time of 2:05.63. He also placed third in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.59). Malone captured second in the 50 freestyle (22.00).

In the 100 butterfly, Tucker and Ryan McNally (jr. Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) finished second (55.29) and third (57.06) respectively. Kyle Banks (fr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) was second in the 500 freestyle (5:05.04), followed by Charlie Borny (fr. Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) third (5:10.15). Banks had a third place in the 1000 freestyle (10:31.46). Brian McDermott (jr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergen Catholic) came in second in the 200 IM (2:09.27) and third in the 200 backstroke (2:03.53). Sean Downey (sr. Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) was third in the 200 IM (2:11.48).

Zach Castelli (so. Ventnor, NJ/Atlantic City) won the men’s three meter diving with 306.10 points and Mark Balesteri (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) was second (272.45 points). On the one meter board, Balesteri took second (265.28 points) followed by Castelli, third (245.15 points). Samantha Rottkamp (so. Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) was the winner in the women’s three meter diving (225.40 points). She placed second in the one meter (190.70 points).

The women’s 200 medley relay captured second place (1:57.13). The team consisted of Kate Winters (jr. Princeton Jct., NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.), Stacey Rahter (jr. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.), Anne O’Gorman (jr. Boonton, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth) and Lauren Hauser (sr. Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston). The 400 freestyle relay of Julie Furdyna (jr. Livingston, NJ/Livingston), Caroline Lewis (jr. Monroeville, NJ/Woodstown), Teresa Stearns (fr. Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit) and Hauser was second with a time of 4:01.94.

Winters won the 100 (1:01.07) and 200 (2:10.68) backstrokes. She also had a second place in the 200 IM (2:15.32). Rahter was the winner in the 200 IM (2:14.21) and she took second in the 100 (1:09.25) and 200 (2:29.31) breaststrokes.

Furdyna recorded second places in the 500 (5:31.83) and 1000 (11:11.68) freestyles. O’Gorman came in second in the 100 butterfly (1:04.50). Steph McAllister (sr. Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) finished second in the 100 backstroke (1:05.54) and she was third in the 200 backstroke (2:22.53). In the 100 freestyle, Stearns was third (58.34) and Kym Romano (fr. Ringoes, NJ/Hunterdon Central Reg.) had a third place in the 200 IM (2:29.51).

The Rowan women host Kutztown University on Saturday, February 6 at 1 p.m. The Prof men and women will compete at the Metropolitan Championships on Friday-Sunday, February 19-21 at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ.
