William Paterson Wins 85-61 At Rowan

GLASSBORO, NJ – Four players scored in double figures to lead the William Paterson University men’s basketball team over Rowan University, 85-61 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday. The Pioneers have an 18 game win streak.

Guard Joseph Ellis (sr. Newark, NJ/Newark Science) led William Paterson with 18 points. Guards Bobby Dunn (sr. Garwood, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson Reg.) and Mike Gawronski (so. Brick, NJ/Brick) each totaled 11 points. Forward Abdoulaye Ouedraogo (sr. Newark, NJ/Newark Science) registered 10 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Guard Eric Moore (sr. Dover, NJ/St. Benedict’s Prep) came off the bench for eight points and six assists.

William Paterson has a 20-1 record with a 9-0 conference mark. The Pioneers are ranked 16th in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll. Rowan is 14-6 overall and 5-4 in the NJAC.

For the Profs, forward Matt DeSouza (so. Margate, NJ/Holy Spirit) scored 10 points. Forward Derek Piccini (sr. Ridgefield, NJ/Ridgefield Mem.) and guards Peter Dinich (fr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and Kendall White (fr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) had nine points apiece. Forward Gary Foster (so. Neptune, NJ/Neptune) added seven points and six assists.

In the first half, William Paterson had a nine point lead (17-8) at 14:03. Ellis contributed with seven points and Dunn followed with six. Piccini’s three-pointer at 13:45 cut the deficit to six points (17-11). The Pioneers were ahead 19-13 at 12:59 then they scored 11 straight points to lead by 17 (30-13). Ellis made nine of the 11 points. Dunn’s layup at 6:11 made the score 42-15. Guard Tim Lucas (sr. Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) hit a three-pointer for a 28 point advantage (49-21) with 3:06 remaining. William Paterson was ahead at the intermission by 24 points (49-25). Ellis ended the period with 16 points.

In the second stanza, Ouedraogo’s layup at 15:12 put the Pioneers up by 31 points (64-33). The Profs trailed by 26 points (64-38) after a three by guard Sean Hughes (jr. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant) at 13:04. Moore hit a three-pointer at 11:30 that made the score 70-40. Rowan was down by 21 points after DeSouza made two foul shots with 3:51 remaining. At 1:35, Gawronski had a layup for a 26 point advantage (82-56). Dinich scored the last basket of the game (85-61) at the six second mark.

Rowan is home again on Wednesday, February 3 against The College of New Jersey at 8 p.m. while William Paterson hosts Ramapo College at 8 p.m.
