CAMDEN, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team defeated Rutgers-Camden, 94-76 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Wednesday night.
The Profs improve to 14-5 overall and 5-3 in the conference. The Scarlet Raptors fall to 5-12 overall with a 0-8 NJAC mark. Rowan was led by guard Kendall White (fr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) with career-highs of 22 points and seven steals. Forward Steve Secula (so. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) added 19 points and a career-best 10 rebounds. Center Derek Piccini (sr. Ridgefield, NJ/Ridgefield Mem.) contributed with 13 points. Forward Gary Foster (so. Neptune, NJ/Neptune) scored nine points and set a career mark with 12 boards. Guard Sean Hughes (jr. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) dished five assists.
For Rutgers-Camden, guard Shawn Greene (jr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) compiled 22 points. Guard Joshua Askew (sr. Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Twp.) and forward Alex Rislin (jr. Union, NJ/Union) registered 13 and 11 points respectively. Forward Kevin Brown (jr. Port Norris, NJ/Millville) posted nine points, eight rebounds and five assists. Center Jared Meredith (jr. Lakewood, NJ/Burlington County Institute of Technology) grabbed six rebounds.
Rowan started the game with an 11-2 run over the first 3:32. Secula scored six of the 11 points. Rutgers-Camden fought back with a 5-0 surge to pull within four (11-7) at 15:49. Greene recorded all five points. The Profs led, 16-12 at 13:31. Rowan scored the next seven points to go up, 23-12 at 11:06. Foster, Pritchett and White each had a basket, while Piccini added a free throw. Forward Tim Matchett’s (jr. Pitman, NJ/Pitman) jumper at 5:47 put Rowan ahead, 33-22. White followed with a three-pointer (5:36) and Secula had a basket (5:03) to stretch the Profs’ advantage to 16 (38-22).
Rutgers-Camden trailed by 15 points (42-27) with 1:55 left. Askew had a layup and a foul shot (1:35) followed by a three-pointer (1:10) to bring the Scarlet Raptors within nine (42-33). Rowan forward Matt DeSouza (so. Margate, NJ/Holy Spirit) nailed a three-pointer with 36 seconds on the clock to make the score, 45-33 at the intermission.
In the second period, White’s layup at 18:12 pushed the lead to 17 (56-39). Rowan was ahead, 70-53 at 9:17 after a layup by Hughes. Rutgers-Camden cut the deficit to 12 (70-58) following two free throws by guard Chris Clahar (sr. Philadelphia, PA/Robert Lamberton) (8:13) and a three-pointer by Askew (7:57). Rowan was up, 75-61 with 4:44 left to play. Rislin registered a three-point play at 4:06 to bring the Scarlet Raptors within 11 (75-64). It was the closest Rutgers-Camden would come. Rowan built a 21 point advantage (94-73) over the next 3:12. The Scarlet Raptors added a foul shot (00:42) and a jumper (00:31) to end the scoring.
Rowan hosts William Paterson University in a NJAC game on Saturday, January 30 at 1 p.m.
