Rowan Wins Over Conference Opponent Montclair State

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams won over conference opponent Montclair State University on Saturday. The men had a score of 180-102 and the women’s victory was 167.5-126.5.

The Prof men are 5-3 overall and the women have a 4-3 record. Both teams are undefeated in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) with a 3-0 mark. The Red Hawk men and women each have a 4-5 overall record. In the conference, the women have a 1-2 record and the men are 0-3.

The Rowan men took first place in the 200 yard medley relay (1:38.95) with the team of Stefan Pietrobono (fr. Newark, DE/Brandywine), Dan Bower (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), Steve Tucker (sr. Pittsgrove, NJ/Sacred Heart) and Bill Malone (so. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic). The men’s 400 freestyle relay won in 3:17.19. The freestyle relay members were Tucker, Pietrobono, Malone and Tim Dimond (fr. Allentown, PA/Emmaus).

In the 200 yard freestyle, Dimond was the winner (1:49.48) and Michael Brooks (jr. Brigantine, NJ/Holy Spirt) was second (1:50.30). Dimond also won the 100 yard free (49.18) and the 100 yard butterfly (54.45). Kyle Banks (fr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) captured first place in the 500 (5:03.76) and 1000 (10:36.77) yard freestyles. Pietrobono and Kevin Sheridan (so. E. Brunswick, NJ/E. Brunswick) were first (54.60) and second (58.46) respectively in the 100 yard backstroke. Bower took first in the 100 (1:00.64) and 200 (2:18.36) yard breaststrokes and the 200 individual medley (2:04.30). Brian McDermott (jr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergen Catholic) won the 200 yard butterfly (2:04.79) and the 200 yard backstroke (2:04.70). Malone took second in the 50 (22.11) and 100 (49.44) yard freestyles. Jake Taylor (so. Millville, NJ/Millville) was second in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:04.17) and third in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:27.21).

The Montclair State men’s 200 yard medley relay finished second in 1:38.95. The medley relay consisted of Sean Chambrovich (jr. Allenhurst, NJ/Red Bank Reg.), Chris Lee (so. Morris Plains, NJ/Parsippany Hills), Nikolas Lumkong (fr. Andover, NJ/Pope John XXIII) and Thomas Long (fr. Morristown, NJ/Morristown). The men’s 400 yard freestyle relay took second (3:20.13) with Blaise Lacca (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), Michael Smith (fr. Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill E.), Long and Zak Westerberg (fr. Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton N.).

Westerberg won the 50 yard freestyle in 22.07 and he took second in the 200 yard individual medley (2:06.65). Matt Hyde (sr. Clifton, NJ/Clifton) came in second (10:54.80) in the 1000 yard freestyle followed by Daniel Gordon (so. Northfield, NJ/Mainland Reg.) third (11:02.88).
In the 200 yard butterfly, Sean French (so. Cranford, NJ/Cranford) and Gordon were second (2:15.35) and third (2:21.89) respectively. French also came in second in the 100 yard butterfly (56.35). Smith took second in the 500 yard freestyle (5:05.89). Lacca had a third place in the 100 yard freestyle (50.09).

In diving, the Profs’ Mark Balesteri (jr. Egg Harbor Twp., NJ/Egg Harbor Twp.) won the one (273.38) and three (277.12) meter diving. Samantha Rottkamp (so. Bridgeton, NJ/Cumberland Reg.) was also a double winner with 251.78 points in the one meter diving and 221.55 points on the three meter board. For the Red Hawks, Jacklyn Beck (so. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) came in second in the one (214.20) and three (186.75) meter diving.

The Rowan women’s 200 yard medley relay won in 1:55.86. The medley relay included Kate Winters (jr. Princeton Jct., NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.), Stacey Rahter (jr. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.), Anne O’Gorman (jr. Boonton, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth) and Lauren Hauser (sr. Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livington). The women’s 400 yard freestyle relay had a winning time of 3:54.64 with Caroline Lewis (jr. Monroeville, NJ/Woodstown), Teresa Stearns (fr. Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit), Julie Furdyna (jr. Livingston, NJ/Livingston) and Hauser.

For the Profs, Winters had first places in the 200 backstroke (2:13.51), 200 yard freestyle (1:58.40) and the 200 yard individual medley (2:13.41). Furdyna was the winner in the 500 (5:24.50) and 1000 (11:26.38) freestyles. In the 100 yard backstroke, Steph McAllister (sr. Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) was first (1:04.01) while Becky Goldberg (sr. Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) and Lindsey Cooker (fr. Brigantine, NJ/Holy Spirit) were second (1:05.87) and third (1:07.48) respectively. Rahter won the 100 yard breaststroke (1:09.61) and came in second in the 100 yard freestyle (56.34). O’Gorman was the winner in the 100 (1:02.61) and 200 (2:18.38) yard butterflies. Hauser swam a winning time of 25.69 in the 50 yard freestyle.

The Montclair State women’s 200 yard medley came in second (1:59.06) with Ashley Vallone (fr. Park Ridge, NJ/Park Ridge), Laura Spadoni (jr. Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area), Laura Flynn (sr. Andover, NJ/Lenape Valley) and Christina Crossin (so. Milford, CT/Lauralton Hall). The women’s 400 yard freestyle relay took second place (3:55.90). The free relay team consisted of Galina Loutchouk (jr. Richboro, PA/Council Rock), Kelly Abner (so. Glenwood, NJ/Vernon), Allie Golden (so. Denville, NJ/Morris Knolls) and Alice Sroga (fr. Mahwah, NJ/Mahwah).

Vallone was the winner in the 100 yard freestyle (56.14). She had second places in the 50 (25.87) and 200 yard (2:05.11) freestyles. Spadoni took second in the 100 (1:11.26) yard breaststroke (2:34.83). She also had a third place in the 200 individual medley (2:22.34). In the 1000 yard freestyle, Jessica Patalano (sr. Edison, NJ/Bishop Ahr) and Sroga finished second (11:54.37) and third (11:58.51) respectively. Loutchouk came in second in the 100 (1:05.61) and 200 yard (2:20.32) butterflies and the 200 yard breaststroke (2:36.02). Abner was second in the 200 yard backstroke (2:20.39) and the 200 yard individual medley (2:20.34). Golden had a second place in the 500 freestyle (5:47.13).

Next week, Rowan travels to The College of New Jersey on Saturday, January 30 for a 2 p.m. conference meet.
