Rowan Holds On To Beat New Jersey City, 62-55

JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team defeated New Jersey City University, 62-55 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.

The Profs have a 13-5 overall record and they are 4-3 in the conference. The Gothic Knights are 9-8 overall with a 3-4 NJAC mark. Guard Kendall White (fr. Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) scored a career-high 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Forward Gary Foster (so. Neptune, NJ/Neptune) tied his career-best with 11 points and pulled down nine boards. Guard Sean Hughes (jr. Pt. Pleasant, NJ/Pt. Pleasant Boro) added nine points and four assists.

For New Jersey City, guard Josh Lopez (sr. Jersey City, NJ/St. Mary’s) scored 16 points. Guard Corey Dixon (jr. Linden, NJ/David Brearley) followed with 10 points. Forward Tom McDermott (jr. Kearny, NJ/Kearny) compiled nine points, seven rebounds and seven steals.

Rowan jumped out to an early 8-3 lead (14:47) in the first period. White sunk two free throws at 9:07 to put the Profs up, 16-12. Lopez answered with a three-pointer at 8:52 to cut the deficit to one (16-15). Rowan forward Steve Secula (so. Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Reg.) had a layup (7:46) and Hughes nailed a three-pointer (6:44) to push the advantage to six (21-15). The Profs were ahead 23-17 at 3:52. McDermott made two foul shots (2:49) and guard Steve Raymond (fr. Asbury Park, NJ/Asbury Park) had a jumper with 45 seconds left to bring the Gothic Knights within two (23-21). Guard Allen Pritchett (sr. Camden, NJ/Woodbury) recorded a layup with six seconds remaining in the half to give the Profs a 25-21 advantage at the intermission. White scored eight points in the first stanza, while McDermott had seven for New Jersey City.

In the second period, Gothic Knights’ forward Armond Lucas’ (jr. Union, NJ/Hillside) layup at 18:28 made the score, 27-23. Rowan went on a 10-3 run to lead by 11 (37-26) at 14:50. Forward Matt DeSouza (so. Margate, NJ/Holy Spirit) sunk a three-pointer, while Foster, Hughes, Secula and White each had two points. Pritchett’s foul shot at 12:19 increased the advantage to 12 (44-32). New Jersey City reeled off eight straight points to pull within four (44-40) at 10:06. Lopez and Dixon each scored three points and forward Walik Albright (fr. Jersey City, NJ/Create Charter) added two. The Profs answered by scoring the next six points to go ahead by 10 (50-40). Guard A.J. Greenwald (fr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) converted a three-point play (9:40), White had a layup (9:13) and Secula made a free throw (8:56).

Rowan was up by six (53-47) with 6:40 left to play. Lopez nailed a three-pointer (5:54) to cut the deficit to three (53-50). The Profs scored the next five points to build an eight point lead (58-50) with 1:16 remaining. Greenwald and White each had two points, while Foster contributed with one. Forward Isiah Johnson (fr. E. Orange, NJ/E. Orange Campus) had a foul shot (1:09) and a layup (00:48) to bring New Jersey City within five (58-53). After two free throws by Pritchett (00:33), Lopez sunk two foul shots (00:28) to make the score, 60-55. White converted two free throws with 28 seconds on the clock to end the scoring.
