GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University men’s basketball team defeated Penn State Abington, 87-54 in a nonconference game on Monday afternoon.
Rowan improves to 12-4, while Penn State Abington has a 3-11 record. Guard Allen Pritchett (sr. Camden, NJ/Woodbury) led the Profs with 17 points off the bench. Forward Tyson Hartnett (sr. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) added 11 points. Forward Derek Piccini (sr. Ridgefield, NJ/Ridgefield Mem.) totaled 10 points and seven rebounds. Guard Gary Foster (so. Neptune, NJ/Neptune) recorded eight points. Guard A.J. Greenwald (fr. West Deptford, NJ/West Deptford) compiled seven points and six boards.
For the Nittany Lions, guard Corey Curtis (so. Philadelphia, PA/BOK Tech) scored 16 points. Forward Joshua Howard (so. Bensalem, PA/Bensalem) contributed with 13 points and five rebounds. Guard Benjamin Moore (so. Philadelphia, PA/Carver HSES) had eight points.
Penn State Abington led 8-7 at 16:38 in the first period. Rowan went on a 17-3 run over the next 3:57 to go ahead, 24-11. Piccini posted six points, while Hartnett and Foster each had four. Forward Matt DeSouza’s (so. Margate, NJ/Holy Spirit) jumper at 8:42 pushed the lead to 17 points (32-15). The Nittany Lions fought back with 10 straight points to come within seven (32-25) at 5:48. Curtis recorded five points, Howard made a three-pointer and guard Francis Hennessey (fr. Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) added a jumper. Rowan was up by six (34-28) at 5:17. The Profs scored the next six points for a 40-28 advantage with 2:35 remaining. Forward Tim Matchett’s (jr. Pitman, NJ/Pitman) jumper with two seconds left made the score, 44-31 at the intermission.
In the second half, the Profs had a 51-39 lead at 14:18. Rowan scored the next seven points to go ahead by 19 points (58-39) at 10:57. Pritchett had five of the seven points. The Profs stretched the advantage to 35 points (84-49) with 3:21 left to play. It marked Rowan’s largest lead of the game.
