WAYNE, NJ – Quarterback Frank Wilczynski scored two rushing touchdowns to lead Rowan University to a 28-13 over William Paterson University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.
Wilczynski (sr. Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook) carried the ball 14 times for 69 yards. He completed 15 of 28 pass attempts for 220 yards. Rowan improves to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference. It marked the Profs’ 300th victory in team history. In 50 seasons, Rowan has a record of 300-183-8. William Paterson has a 1-2 record and a 0-2 NJAC mark.
Profs’ superback Ryan Leafey (sr. Westville, NJ/Deptford) ran for 45 yards and one touchdown on 10 rushes, while superback Jon Downes (sr. Gibbstown, NJ/Valley Forge Military (PA)) added 26 yards and one touchdown on 14 touches. Tight end Kevin DelleDonne (so. Summit, NJ/Summit) caught three balls for 54 yards. Wideouts TJ Pratt (fr. Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Reg.) and James Kinloch (fr. Westampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley Reg.) contributed with 39 and 37 receiving yards respectively.
Linebackers Kevin Taylor (sr. Westwood, NJ/Westwood) and Andrew Yezzi (sr. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) registered 10 tackles and one sack apiece. Defensive end Matt Hoffman (jr. Burlington, NJ/Burlington Twp.) posted nine stops and three sacks (-8 yards). Defensive tackle Frank Olexson (so. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) forced one fumble. Safety Rocky Aliberti (jr. Sewell, NJ/Clearview Reg.) recorded one interception and safety Mike Barone (sr. Hammonton, NJ/Hammonton) had a fumble recovery.
For William Paterson, quarterback Matt Marshall (sr. Burlington, NJ/Burlington City) threw for 257 yards and two touchdowns. He completed 24 of 32 pass attempts. Running back Marcus McKinney (so. Paterson, NJ/John F. Kennedy) carried the ball 19 times for 75 yards. Wide receiver Joel Rivera (sr. Hoboken, NJ/Hoboken) made six grabs for 72 yards and one touchdown. Tight end Chris Schule (sr. Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) chipped in with six receptions for 70 yards and touchdown. Wideout Bruce Katkowski (sr. Saddle Brook, NJ/Paramus Catholic) had three receptions for 51 yards.
Defensive tackle Dyon Moore (jr. Brooklyn, NY/Hudson Catholic) totaled 10 tackles and one forced fumble. Defensive end Keith Sayball (sr. Milford, CT/Foran) followed with nine stops and defensive back Doug Dudek (so. Rockaway, NJ/Morris Hills) had eight. Safety Chris Thomas (sr. West Milford, NJ/West Milford) intercepted one pass, while defensive end Dan Nunez (jr. Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/Paramus Catholic) forced a fumble.
Rowan went ahead 7-0 at 2:05 in the first quarter after Leafey found the end zone on a 13 yard run. Barone recovered a fumble on the William Paterson 32 yard line to set up the drive. Wilczynski completed a 23 yard pass to DelleDonne and Leafey added a one yard carry before the touchdown.
At 6:56 in the second period, Wilczynski had a six yard touchdown rush. Aliberti’s interception gave the Profs the ball on the Pioneers’ 25 yard line. Leafey caught a 16 yard pass that got Rowan down to the 18. Wilczynski scored after a one yard carry by Leafey. With 1:19 remaining, Marshall connected with Rivera for a 30 yard touchdown. The drive was six plays that covered 87 yards. Marshall completed three of three passes for 78 yards. The score was 14-7 at the intermission.
Rowan scored on its first possession of the second half. At 11:55, Downes rushed three yards for the touchdown. Kinloch hauled in a 37 yard catch that gave the Profs the ball on the Pioneers’ 27 yard line. Wilczynski added two runs of 14 and 22 yards to set up the score.
At 14:57 in the fourth, Wilczynski’s one yard touchdown carry put the Profs up 28-7. The drive consisted of nine plays and 84 yards. Pratt recorded two receptions for 39 yards and DelleDonne added one grab for 19 yards. The Pioneers had a 21 yard touchdown pass from Marshall to Schule at 10:11 to cut the deficit to 28-13. The PAT attempt failed. Thomas’ interception gave William Paterson the ball on the Rowan 48 yard line. Marshall completed passes of 13 and 14 yards prior to the touchdown.
