GLASSBORO, NJ – Back Thomas Benack scored the game-winning goal to give Montclair State University a 2-1 victory over Rowan University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game on Saturday.
With 5:23 remaining, midfielder Mike Krol (jr. Howell, NJ/Howell) centered a pass into the box and Benack (jr. Sparta, NJ/Lenape Valley) made a diving header, sending the ball into the left side of the net.
Montclair State is 6-0-1 overall and Rowan has a 4-2 record. This week, the Red Hawks are ranked third in the South Atlantic Region and 17th in the nation. It was the first conference game of the season for both teams.
Rowan led 1-0 after the first period. Back Jason Dugan (sr. Seaville, NJ/Ocean City) scored on a penalty kick at 11:48. In the second, Red Hawks’ back Coron Short (jr. Dayton, NJ/South Brunswick) scored on a shot that went into the upper left corner of the goal. Midfielder Michael Cullen (sr. Clementon, NJ/Highland Reg.) picked up the assist.
Montclair State took 13 shots, while Rowan had five. Goalkeeper Teddy Ritter (sr. Belford, NJ/Middletown N.) made one save in the Red Hawks’ net. For the Profs, goalkeeper Charlie Cunliffe (jr. Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood) stopped four shots.
Rowan is home on Wednesday, September 23 against The College of New Jersey at 7:30 p.m.
