ONEONTA, NY – The Rowan University women’s soccer team had a 6-0 victory over Hartwick College on the first day of the Mayor’s Cup Tournament on Saturday.
Rowan improves to 3-0, while Hartwick has a 1-1 record. In the other game on Saturday, The College of New Jersey defeated SUNY Oneonta, 2-1 in double overtime. On Sunday, Rowan faces SUNY Oneonta at 1:30 p.m. and The College of New Jersey faces Hartwick at 4 p.m.
The Profs were led by forward Jess Babice (jr. Groveville, NJ/Steinert) with two goals and one assist. Midfielders Nina Fragoso (so. Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Reg.) and Kate Bower (so. Farmingdale, NJ/Colts Neck) and forward Cathy Dyciewski (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Mem.) each found the net once. Midfielder Veronica Rhea (so. Pennsauken, NJ/Paul VI) contributed with three assists.
Rowan and Hartwick took 10 shots apiece. Goalkeeper Jillian Brannan (so. Saddle Brook, NJ/Saddle Brook) made two saves in the Profs’ net. Goalies Lauren Ploof (sr. Hammond, NY/Hammond) and Alyssa Rondo (so. Saco, ME/Thornton Academy) both stopped one shot for the Hawks.
Babice put Rowan up 1-0 with an unassisted goal 43 seconds into the first half. At 13:57, Babice scored on a breakaway and Rhea picked up the assist. Rhea passed a ball off a direct kick and Bower knocked it into the goal at 20:24. The Profs scored on an own goal at 41:44 for a 4-0 lead at the intermission.
At 50:47 in the second period, Fragoso kicked the ball by the goalie from 10 yards out. Rhea and Babice both earned an assist. With 35 seconds left to play, Dyciewski took a shot from the right side that went over the goalkeeper’s head.
