Rowan Wins Doubleheader Against Western Connecticut State, 4-2 and 13-8

WINTER HAVEN, FL – The Rowan University baseball team won a doubleheader against Western Connecticut State University, 4-2 and 13-8 on Saturday. It was the last game for the Profs on their spring trip at the Russ Matt Tournament.

In the first game, center fielder Garrett Mull (sr. Chatsworth, NJ/Lenape) had two hits in three at bats and one run scored. First baseman Tom Ready (sr. Blackwood, NJ/Triton Reg.) was one for two with two RBIs and a double. Second baseman Pete Delleani (jr. Manalapan, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) contributed with one hit (three at bats) and one run scored. Third baseman Brad Woodend (so. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) and designated hitter Matt Johanson (jr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) each scored a run and catcher Tim Barnshaw (sr. Dayton, NJ/South Brunswick) had one RBI.

Right-hander Mike Swietanski (so. Woodbury, NJ/Deptford) pitched 6.2 innings for the win. Swietanski (2-0) scattered six hits and had three strikeouts. Righty Todd Burdette (so. Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) finished the game and earned a save. Left-hander Billy Armstrong took the loss for the Colonials. In 6.2 innings, he gave up six hits and struck out seven batters.

WestConn went up 1-0 in the bottom of the second inning on a RBI single by right fielder Dan Amarante. Rowan tied the score in the top of the sixth. Woodend walked then went to second on a sac bunt by Ready. A wild pitch advanced Woodend to third and he came home on a wild pitch. The Profs had a 4-1 advantage with three runs in the seventh inning. Barnshaw’s sac fly scored Delleani. Ready drove in Mull and Johanson with a double. The Colonials had one run in the bottom half.

Left-hander Mark Porter (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Lower Merion (PA)) was the winning pitcher in the second game in relief. Porter (1-0) pitched 6.1 innings and only allowed one run. He had four strikeouts. Burdette picked up his fifth save on the season.

Right fielder John McMullin (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) went three for four at the plate with three RBIs, one run scored and a double. Catcher Tom Reindel (sr. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) contributed with three hits (four at bats) and three runs scored. Designated hitter Scott Weaver (so. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury) added two hits (three at bats), one RBI, a double and one run scored. Ready had three RBIs, one run scored and a double.


The Colonials were ahead 7-0 after the first inning. The Profs started their comeback with four runs in the third. Third baseman David Lenig (jr. Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) and Weaver scored on an error. Ready was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and shortstop Marc Magliaro (fr. Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp.) crossed the plate. McMullin singled in Reindel.

Rowan took the lead (9-7) with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Ready doubled in two runs and McMullin had a RBI double. McMullin scored on Delleani’s double and Weaver followed with a double that brought home Delleani. The Profs tacked on four more runs in the sixth that made the score 13-7. Magliaro and center fielder Keith Evans (jr. Audubon, NJ/Audubon) both crossed the plate on errors. McMullin singled in Reindel and left fielder Jordan Marsch (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) came home on a sacrifice fly by second baseman Brandon Winkler (fr. Glendora, NJ/Paul VI). Western Connecticut scored its last run in the seventh.

Rowan (9-3-1) has a rescheduled game at home on Tuesday, March 24 against Albright College at 3:30 p.m.
