GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women’s lacrosse team defeated Goucher College, 11-5 in the home opener on Thursday.
Midfielder Kelly Angstadt (sr. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) led the Profs with four goals. Attack Lauren Yee (so. Mendham, NJ/Mendham) contributed with three goals and midfielder Carly Welsh (sr. Allenwood, NJ/Wall) added two goals and one assist. Attacks Allie Dickey (so. Stevensville, MD/Kent Island) and Lauren Crennan (sr. Pottstown, PA/Owen J. Roberts) pitched in with one goal and one assist apiece. Attack Tori Hart (jr. Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and midfielder Nicole Valianti (so. Oaklyn, NJ/Collingswood) had one assist apiece.
Midfielder Colleen Cole (so. Holliston, MA/Northfield Mt. Hebron School) scored three goals for Goucher. Defender Becca Smith (fr. Leesburg, VA/Heritage) registered one goal and one assist. Midfielder Marlo Tersigni (sr. Boston, MA/Lawrence Academy) contributed with a goal.
Rowan, ranked 18th in the nation, improves to 2-1 on the season. Goucher has an overall record of 2-3. The Profs took 29 shots while the Gophers had 16. Rowan goalie Alicia Mannino (sr. Richboro, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) made 10 saves. For Goucher, goalie Brittany Foster (sr. Portland, ME/Portland) stopped 11 shots.
Cole put Goucher on the scoreboard first at 1:47 with an assist from Smith. Rowan followed with six straight goals to lead 6-1 with 15:54 left in the period. Angstadt and Welsh both hit the Gophers’ net twice while Dickey and Crennan each had one goal. Cole scored her second goal at 14:52 on a free position shot. Yee put the Profs ahead 7-2 at the intermission. She had her first goal with a free position shot with 1:49 on the clock.
In the second half, Cole’s third goal came on a free position shot. Rowan went up 10-3 after two goals by Yee and one from Angstadt. The Gophers cut the deficit to five after Smith and Tersigni each scored. With 4:08 remaining, Angstadt recorded the last goal of the game on a pass from Valianti.
Next week, Rowan travels to San Antonio, TX for spring break. The women’s lacrosse team will play defending national champion Hamilton College (NY) on Thursday, March 19 at 6 p.m.
