GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University baseball team won 10-3 over Centenary College in the home opener on Saturday.
First baseman Tom Ready (sr. Blackwood, NJ/Triton Reg.) led the Profs with three hits (four bats), five RBIs and one run scored. Right fielder John McMullin (sr. Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) went two for four with a double, one RBI and one run scored. Catcher Tom Reindel (sr. Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and second baseman Brad Woodend (so. Medford, NJ/Shawnee) each scored two runs.
Right-hander Kevin O’Hara (sr. Clayton, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) pitched five innings for the victory. O’Hara only gave up three hits and he had four strikeouts. Lefty Mark Porter (jr. Cinnaminson, NJ/Lower Merion (PA)) went three innings in relief while right-hander Jay Gallen (jr. Gibbsboro, NJ/Bishop Eustace) pitched the ninth.
For Centenary, center fielder Louis Penna (so. West Haven, CT/Notre Dame) was two for four at the plate. Right fielder Andrew Granozio (jr. Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), third baseman Jose Cordova (so. Brentwood, NY/Brentwood) and first baseman Michael Oneglia (so. Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne) recorded one RBI apiece. Shortstop Jayson Loder (sr. Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) had one hit (three at bats) and one run scored. Granozio along with left fielder Mark DeMaio (jr. Morris Plains, NJ/Parsippany Hills) scored a run. Left-hander Andrew Koncen (sr. Scotch Plains, NJ/Union Catholic) took the loss on the mound. He pitched two innings and allowed four hits and four runs.
The score was tied at one after the first inning. DeMaio came home on an error for Centenary and Ready had a RBI single for Rowan. Ready knocked in Woodend who got on base with a double to left field. The Profs went ahead 4-1 with three runs in the bottom of the second. Designated hitter Bill Donovan (fr. Mantua, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) crossed the plate on a fielder’s choice. Ready recorded a two RBI single.
The Cyclones trailed by two after one run in the top of the third. Oneglia’s sacrifice fly scored Granozio. Rowan led 6-2 after the fourth inning. Ready drove in Reindel with a single. Left fielder Jordan Marsch (jr. Brick, NJ/Brick Twp.) had a single that scored Ready. Both teams registered one run in the sixth. Cordova walked with the bases loaded and Loder went home. Reindel scored on a ground out and Ready picked up the RBI.
The Profs pulled away with two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth. Center fielder Garrett Mull (sr. Chatsworth, NJ/Lenape) doubled in McMullin. Mull stole third and continued home on an error. In the eighth, McMullin had a RBI single that scored left fielder Scott Weaver (so. Ledgewood, NJ/Roxbury).
Next week, Rowan hosts Albright College on Friday, March 6 at 3 p.m. The baseball team is also home on Saturday, March 7 against Franklin & Marshall College at 11 a.m. and The College at Brockport at 2:30 p.m.
