LANCASTER, PA – The Rowan University men’s and women’s swim teams competed on the final day of the Franklin & Marshall Invitational on Sunday. The men finished fourth out of 10 teams, while the women were seventh among 13 schools.
The men’s team totaled 382 points and the women had 262.5. The College of New Jersey men and women both took first place with 826.5 and 653.5 points respectively.
On Sunday, the men’s 400 freestyle relay of Bill Malone (so. Sewell, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), Tim Dimond (fr. Allentown, PA/Emmaus), Stefan Pietrobono (fr. Newark, DE/Brandywine) and Kevin Sheridan (so. E. Brunswick, NJ/E. Brunswick) captured third place in 3:14.24. The women’s 400 freestyle relay came in seventh (3:46.71) with the team of Stacey Rahter (jr. Somers Point, NJ/Mainland Reg.), Kate Winters (jr. Princeton Jct., NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro S.), Ashley Gagnon (sr. South Amboy, NJ/Middlesex County Academy) and Teresa Stearns (fr. Absecon, NJ/Holy Spirit).
Malone took fifth in the men’s 100 freestyle (47.97) and Dimond was fifth in the 200 butterfly (2:00.89). In the 1650 freestyle, Kyle Banks (fr. Glassboro, NJ/Glassboro) finished eighth (17:30.66), followed by Charlie Borny (fr. Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.) 11th (17:50.46). Brian McDermott (jr. Bergenfield, NJ/Bergen Catholic) was ninth in the 200 backstroke (2:00.90).
Winters captured second place in the women’s 200 backstroke with a time of 2:09.24. Gagnon came in fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:32.60). In the 200 butterfly, Anne O’Gorman (jr. Boonton, NJ/Academy of St. Elizabeth) was eighth (2:18.51). Julie Furdyna (jr. Livingston, NJ/Livingston) had a ninth place in the 1650 freestyle (18:34.80).
In the morning session on Saturday, the men finished third in the 400 medley relay (3:35.76) and fourth in the 200 freestyle relay (1:27.49). The medley relay consisted of Pietrobono, Dan Bower (so. Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.), Dimond and Malone. Pietrobono, Malone, Steve Tucker (sr. Pittsgrove, NJ/Sacred Heart) and Ryan McNally (jr. Woodstown, NJ/Woodstown) were on the freestyle relay.
Malone was the winner in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.56. Dimond took second in the 500 freestyle (4:43.50), which broke the school record held by Fred Burwell (4:43.85 in 1990). Bower had a ninth place in the 200 individual medley (IM) with 2:02.45.
The women’s 400 medley relay of Winters, Gagnon, Rahter and Stearns placed fifth in 4:09.91. Winters and Rahter were fourth (2:11.83) and fifth (2:15.26) respectively in the 200 IM. Winters time surpassed the school mark held by Lorin Maurer (2:12.59 in 2000).
In the evening session, the men’s 200 medley captured third place (1:38.71). The team consisted of Pietrobono, Bower, Dimond and Tucker. Rowan was fourth in the 800 freestyle with a time of 7:14.92. Dimond, Malone, Sheridan and McDermott made up the relay.
Malone came in fourth place in the 200 freestyle (1:46.82). In the 100 butterfly, McDermott finished seventh (53.77), followed by Dimond eighth (54.18). Pietrobono was fifth in the 100 backstroke (54.56), while Bower took sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.34).
The women’s 200 medley relay had a fourth place finish in 1:53.85. The team was comprised of Winters, Gagnon, Rahter and Lauren Hauser (sr. Mountainside, NJ/Governor Livingston). Winters captured second place in the 400 IM (4:36.82), broke the school record held by Jen Hodgins (4:44.66 in 1995). Rahter was fifth (1:09.52) and eighth (1:02.01) in the 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly respectively.
The Rowan men host the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy on Saturday, December 12 at 1 p.m.
