Rutgers-Newark Wins 2-0 Over Host Rowan

GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rutgers-Newark men’s soccer team won 2-0 over host Rowan University on Sunday night in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) game.

The win moved the Scarlet Raiders up to second and a three-way tie in the conference. Rowan, The College of New Jersey and Rutgers-Newark all have a 4-2-2 NJAC record. Rutgers-Newark is 11-3-4 overall and Rowan is 10-5-2 on the season.

The last game of the conference schedule is on Wednesday. Rowan plays at Rutgers-Camden at 6 p.m. and The College of New Jersey travels to Rutgers-Newark for a 7 p.m. contest. The top six teams in the NJAC advance to the conference tournament that starts on Saturday, October 31. The first and second place teams receive first round byes.

Both of Rutgers-Newark’s goals came in the second half. Back Kofi Agyemang (so. Union, NJ/ St. Benedict’s Prep) scored the first one at 49:51. He dribbled the ball to the right side of the box and blasted a shot to the lower left post of the Rowan goal. Agyemang had a free kick that was saved by Prof goalie Charlie Cunliffe (jr. Lakewood, NJ/Lakewood) and midfielder Tyler Chiara (sr. Jamesburg, NJ/Monroe Twp.) kicked in the rebound 10 minutes later.

Rutgers-Newark totaled 20 shots and Rowan took nine. Goalie Matt Zielyk (jr. West Orange, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) stopped four shots for his eighth shutout. Cunliffe ended the game with eight saves.
