GLASSBORO, NJ - Michael Zarfati caught two touchdown passes, but (RV) Rowan couldn't overcome #21 Mary Hardin-Baylor, 35-14, in the football opener for both teams at Coach Wackar Stadium.
 
Zarfati, a junior, totaled eight receptions on 11 targets for a career-high 173 yards as he teamed up with senior quarterback Nate Maiers for the two scores. Maiers was 18-for-28 passing for 228 yards, with Tyshawn Bookman leading the way on the ground with 58 yards on 14 carries. 

Both teams scored in the first quarter but battled through a scoreless second as the Crusaders held a 14-7 halftime lead. UMHB scored twice in the third quarter to build up a 28-7 lead, but the Profs cut it to 28-14 with 8:44 to go in the game. The Crusaders put the game away with a rushing touchdown with 3:21 to play.
 
The Profs got off to a flying start, scoring on their first possession of the season, going 58 yards in just three plays. Maiers hit Zarfati over the middle and the junior took it into the end zone for a 43-yard reception at 13:45 and a 7-0 lead.
 
UMHB (1-0) didn't waste any time tying the score, as Carson Horton tossed a 19-yard pass to Trace Meullion at 9:59. The Crusaders pulled ahead when Horton completed a short pass to BJ Stewart , who took it 84 yards with 3:44 left in the quarter, to take a 14-7 lead.
 
UMHB scored on the first possession of the second half in just two plays as Maurice Moore scored on a 55-yard reception. Stewart then scored his second of the game with 3:04 left in the third quarter, on a 36-yard pass.
 
Zarfati notched his second TD on the Profs' first play of their drive as he connected with Maiers for a 41-yard reception, bringing Rowan within 28-14, before UMHB
 
UMHB put the game out of reach as Cody Chapman intercepted Maiers on the Profs' drive and ran it back to the 12-yard line, where the Crusaders scored in just two plays.  
 
The Profs (0-1) head on the road next week to visit Moravian on Saturday, September 12th with a noon kickoff.
