Maiers, Defense Shine as Football Shuts Out Moravian, 34-0, For First Win on the Season

BETHLEHEM, PA -- Nate Maiers threw four touchdown passes while the Rowan defense put up a shutout as the Profs picked up its first win of the season in a 34-0 win at Moravian.

Nunes Bukula IV totaled three scores on the day, two in the air and one on the ground as the senior finished with 60 rushing yards on 11 attempts and 123 receiving yards on two grabs. Michael Zarfati led all pass catchers with 146 yards on nine receptions including a pair of scores.

Defensively, the Profs (1-1) limited the Greyhounds just to just 17 net yards rushing including six tackles for losses, two pass breakups and a sack. Jackson Ferrante totaled a team-best nine stops while AJ Ryker, Ezra Williams-Thomas, and Justus Peyton each added six tackles.

Rowan put points on the board on the game's opening drive in just five plays as Maiers found Zarfati on a 32-yard touchdown pass just 2:10 into the contest.

Early in the second, Moravian drove the ball down to the Rowan 17, but a 34-yard field goal attempt was no good to keep the 6-0 score. The defense forced a fourth-down stop on the next Greyhound possession at its own 22 yard line. Seven plays later on a 3rd and 11 from the Rowan 32, Maiers hooked up with Bukula IV on long 68-yard catch and score at the 7:44 mark. Another defensive stop turned into Prof points just before the half as Zarfati hauled in his second score of the day.

The opening drive of the second half saw the defense stonewall Moravian after the Greyhounds recovered a fumble on a punt deep in Prof territory. Later in the quarter, a short punt gave Rowan the ball at the Moravian 40. Six plays later, Bukula IV ran it in from one-yard out to add to the lead.

Bukula IV capped the scoring at the 10:34 mark of the fourth pulling in a pass from Maiers for a 49-yard touchdown.

Maiers was officially 14-of-22 for 293 yards with four TD's and two interceptions. Moravian quarterback Antonio Russo threw for 251 yards on 29-of-52 passing.

The Profs are off next weekend and will return to action on Saturday, September 26th at home against Lycoming. Kickoff from Coach Richard Wackar Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
