RALEIGH, NC -- #6 Rowan squeezed past #25 Salisbury, 4-2, in eight innings to cap action on Saturday at the Grand Slam Triangle Classic in a split. Earlier in the day, the Profs suffered a 4-0 decision to William Peace.
Saturday's second matchup pitted the Profs and Sea Gulls, two teams that met in the NCAA Super Regional last season, in a game that went to extra innings.
Starter
BethAnne Doderer went all eight innings, striking out a career high six batters, while yielding the two runs on five hits and five walks. She limited Salisbury to just three hits through six innings before working out of a jam in the seventh.
Rowan struck for two runs in the top of the first, thanks to a RBI double from
Kate Evick and later a pinch hit RBI single from
Emma Dobkin to plate Evick for a 2-0 lead. In the bottom half, the Sea Gulls put two on in scoring position with no outs, but the Profs turned a big line out double play followed by a fly out to squash the threat.
In the bottom of the seventh, Salisbury loaded the bases with no outs before back-to-back walks crossed a pair of runs to tie it up. Doderer fought through the frame, getting a pair of strikeouts to turn things over to the eighth.
With
Mikayla Dansky placed on second to start the eighth, she swiped third and came home to score as the throw down went into left field. Three batters later, with pinch runner
Gia DiMeglio on third,
Abigail Pawlowski executed a squeeze bunt where DiMeglio beat the tag to give the Profs a two-run edge. Doderer sent the Sea Gulls down in order in the bottom half to help lock up the win.
Dansky scored twice while Pawlowski added a double.
The first game of the day saw William Peace's Reagan Stewart frustrate the Prof bats by not allowing a hit in the complete game decision.
The Pacers plated a pair of runs in the fourth on a two-run single. Stewart added an RBI single in the seventh to add to the lead.
Emily McCutcheon suffered the loss, allowing the four runs on six hits with two K's and two walks through six innings.
Madison Cooley came on to throw in the seventh.
Rowan is right back at it on Monday in a rescheduled DH with SUNY-Oneonta. The matchup will take place at the University of Delaware's Delaware Softball Diamond in a 1 p.m. start. Directions can be found at this
