GLASSBORO, NJ -- #10 Rowan took two from Montclair State on Sunday, 8-2, and 2-0, in both teams' New Jersey Athletic Conference openers.
Game one
Kate Evick had three hits including an RBI double and
Abigail Pawlowski drove in a pair of runs as the Profs opened up a 1-0 lead in the fifth with four runs.
After the Red Hawks crossed two unearned runs in the sixth to cut the lead to three, Rowan countered with three of their own in the bottom half to add to the lead.
Mikayla Dansky and
Ava Fisher each had an RBI and scored in that frame for a six-run edge.
Starter
BethAnne Doderer struck out a career-high 10 batters on just three hits and a walk with no earned runs for her third-straight win in as many starts.
With runners on the corners and two outs in the bottom of the first, Pawlowski knocked in Fisher for an early 1-0 edge.
Doderer (9-1) allowed just one hit over the next four innings, including 1-2-3 frames in the third, fourth and fifth respectively.
Montclair State's Jordan Tarabokia (4-2) took the loss, giving up four runs on seven hits as she threw into the fifth. Teammate Zoe Turner was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen base.
Game two
Emily McCutcheon (7-4) spun a complete game shutout, yielding just five hits, two walks, and striking out five.
The Profs scored both of its runs in the third thanks to an RBI double from
Zoey Rogers and later a base hit from Evick to plate Rogers.
Dansky had two hits, a triple in the third and later a double in the fifth.
McCutcheon was tested early as a one-out, bases loaded spot in the second from the Red Hawks was extinguished thanks to a line out and groundout. Montclair looked to threaten in the fourth, getting back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second. McCutcheon and the Profs turned a big 1-6-3 double play and a fly out to keep the visitors off the scoreboard.
The Red Hawks were sent down in order by McCutcheon over the final two innings to help lock up the conference sweep.
Carly Mockenhaupt (3-3) fanned three on seven hits for Montclair State.
NJAC play continues for the Profs in a doubleheader at Stockton on Tuesday with a 2:30 p.m. first pitch.
