WINTER HAVEN, FL --
Kate Evick delivered a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh to lift #20 Rowan over #16 Case Western Reserve for a 6-5 victory, highlighting a split for the Profs on its first day of its Spring Break trip in Florida.
Earlier in the day, Wittenberg held off the Profs in a 3-2 decision.
Game one
BethAnne Doderer (2-1) worked through four-plus innings, yielding the three runs on five hits with two K's and a walk. Evick,
Mikayla Dansky, and
Zoey Rogers each had two hits in the affair.
Rowan and Wittenberg remained scoreless through three innings before the Tigers plated three runs on four hits in the fourth. The Profs looked to answer in the fifth, loading the bases with no outs but were denied, keeping it a three-run deficit.
Now in the seventh, a lead-off pinch-hit double from
Cami Morgan, followed by a walk from Rogers and a single from
Zara MacNair loaded the bases once again. Dansky came through with a two-run single to slice the Tiger lead to just one, but Wittenberg was able to close it out with two pop ups and a called third strike to cement the final score.
Game two
This time it was the Profs who built a three-run lead before the Spartans plated four runs in the top of the seventh to go ahead briefly before Evick's heroics.
Tied 1-1 in the second, Rogers came through with a two-out flare into center field to score
Lauren Foltz and
Carly Polsky for a 3-1 edge.
Evick's sac fly in the fifth scored Dansky as the lead grew to three runs.
The Profs were guilty of three errors in the seventh that allowed Case Western Reserve to grab a 5-4 advantage over starter
Emily McCutcheon.
Back-to-back singles from MacNair and Dansky put two on for Evick, who battled through an eight-pitch at bat. Her shot down the left field line allowed both runners to score to walk it off for Rowan.
McCutcheon (3-2) went the distance, allowing just the one earned run on seven hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Dansky scored three times and swiped a bag as well.
The team is right back at it tomorrow with games against Bowdoin at 10 a.m. and Ohio Wesleyan at 12:30 p.m.
