GLASSBORO, NJ -- #2 Rowan repeated as New Jersey Athletic Conference Champions, as the Profs downed Ramapo twice on Sunday to claim its 13th championship in program history. Game one saw Rowan grind out a 5-2 victory to force a winner-take-all second where a big five-run seventh helped open up a sizable margin in a 9-2 win to claim the conference title for the third time in the last four seasons.
Selections to the 2025 NCAA Division III Tournament will be unveiled on Monday at 11 a.m. at
www.ncaa.com.
The two wins on the day breaks the program-record for most victories in a season with #43, breaking the old mark of 42 set in 2023 and in 2016.
Game one
Starter
Emily McCutcheon limited the Roadrunners to two runs on six hits, with two strikeouts and a walk to raise her record to 18-1.
Offensively,
Kate Evick was 2-for-3 with a big two-run double in the third to give Rowan a 4-1 edge.
McKenzie Melvin added two hits while
Liz McCaffery and
Abigail Pawlowski both scored twice.
Ramapo's Avery Kontura singled home Katie Rygiel in the first to put the visitors on the board. Pawlowski countered in the bottom half, knocking in McCaffery and later scoring on
Breanna Bryant's double down the line in left to put Rowan ahead, 2-1.
After a 6-4-3 double play to turn things to the bottom of the third, the Profs upped its lead as Evick hit a two-out double to the gap in right center to plate Pawlowski and
Aly Reim to make it a three-run contest.
Kontura scored on an RBI single from Hannah Hensler in the fourth but Melvin got that run back in the bottom half as her double plated McCaffery from first for a 5-2 lead.
McCutcheon allowed just one baserunner over the final three innings to help lock up the win.
Game two
The Profs, designated as the away team, held a 4-2 edge heading into the seventh where the bats produced five runs on five hits highlighted by a two-run double from
Payton MacNair to help with some breathing room for starter
Rylee Lutz, who bounced back from Saturday's outing, yielding just the two runs on five hits with three K's and a pair of walks to earn the win and the NJAC Title.
The duo also made some team history as well. MacNair's double gave the fifth year her 276th career hit, breaking the previous record of 275 by Joy Pittner (1993-96). Lutz (19-1) notched her 76th career pitching victory to become the program's all-time wins leader, breaking the old mark of 75 set by Barbara Sbarra (1987-90).
After the Profs crossed a run on a safety squeeze by MacNair to plate McCaffery in the first, the Roadrunners answered in the second as Rygiel struck for a two-run double to give Ramapo a 2-1 advantage.
Bryant doubled in MacNair and Melvin as part of that three-run third to help put the Profs back on top.
Lutz spun 1-2-3 innings in the fourth, fifth, and sixth to help keep the Ramapo bats on ice.
Pawlowski, Bryant, and Reim along with MacNair added RBI hits in the top of the seventh which was more than enough for Lutz, who got a forceout at second in the bottom half to start the celebration.
