GLASSBORO, NJ -- #3 Rowan opened the 2025 season with a sweep of visiting SUNY-Oneonta as the Profs took both games on Wednesday, 4-0, and 7-2.
Rylee Lutz fired a one-hit, nine-strikeout performance and
McKenzie Melvin homered and drove in three runs as Rowan cruised to a 4-0 in the day's first matchup.
Melvin (2-for-4) and
Payton MacNair (3-for-3) each knocked in a pair of runs to help the Profs to a 7-2 victory in the nightcap.
Game one
Rowan put a run on the board in its first at-bat as
Liz McCaffery led off the frame with a triple. Melvin then put down an infield bunt hit to allow McCaffery to score for a 1-0 lead.
In the third, Melvin cranked her 13th career home run, this time a solo shot to right center to make it 2-0. She would go 2-for-2 at the plate and add a stolen base. McCaffery later scored from third, beating home a throw from a foul out on the third base side from Melvin for a three-run spread.
It was more than enough for Lutz, who did not allow a runner until the fourth and the first hit until the seventh.
Abigail Pawlowski added a sac fly in the sixth to plate pinch runner
Mikayla Dansky from second base to account for the scoring.
McCaffery finished 2-for-3 with a double, triple, and two runs scored. Pawlowski added a double as one of her two hits.
Game two
The Profs took advantage of a pair of errors in the first and third innings to get out to a 3-0 advantage.
After the Red Dragons got on the board with an RBI double in the fourth, MacNair answered in the bottom half as her two-bagger brought home sister
Zara MacNair.
Now 4-2 Profs in the sixth, Melvin kept the hot bat going as her triple scored Z. MacNair and McCaffery, giving her five RBI's on the day.
Starter
Emily McCutcheon limited Oneonta to two runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts and a walk in six innings in her season debut to score the victory.
Makayla Veneziale spun the final inning in relief.
Rowan (2-0) welcomes SUNY-New Paltz to Glassboro for two games on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
