MONTCLAIR, NJ -- A last second three-pointer from
Brycen Williams at the buzzer was waved off giving Montclair State a wild 79-78 decision over Rowan in a New Jersey Athletic Conference matchup Wednesday evening.
Williams' attempt from the right corner was reviewed by the officials for several minutes but was determined that the horn sounded before the shot was released. In a game that featured 23 lead changes, the Profs (9-8, 6-4 NJAC) had a last look on an inbound with 1.9 seconds near midcourt to try for a 24th and final lead change.
The Profs had four players in double figures led by
Chris McCarron, who hit three of the team's six three-pointers to tie his career-high with 15 points.
Khalif Meares added 14,
Taz Cantey scored 12, and
Ife Okebiorun had 10 points while Williams finished with nine.
Ahmad Robertson paced the Red Hawks (12-5, 7-3 NJAC) with a game-high 18 off the bench. Teammate Jacob Morales added 14 points and a team-best eight boards.
Rowan fell behind by 10 points early, 18-8, but used an 11-0 run, ending on five points from McCarron, to take a 19-18 lead. The Red Hawks scored five straight to inch ahead, 28-25, with 6:26 left in the half.
Montclair State went up 41-34 in the final two minutes of the half, before McCarron hit a three-pointer at :15, to pull the Profs within 41-37 at halftime.
The Profs erased its halftime deficit by opening the second half with seven straight points to take a 42-40 lead. The Red Hawks hit six of its nine triples in the second half, with the final one coming from Morales with 3:23 to give MSU a 73-72 lead.
Meares' breakaway layin off a steal made it a one-point game (79-78) with 26 ticks left. The Red Hawks had two chances to add to the lead after the Profs were in the bonus. However, Montclair missed the front end on both of its one-and-one attempts in the final 15 seconds. The latter attempt was snagged by
Jamir Spivey where Rowan was able to call a time out to set up for one last chance.
The Profs return home to host NJCU on Saturday, January 25, in a 1 p.m. start.
